For some months now there has been a pick up truck parked on the road in a residential area near where I live. I am aware that it has not moved during that time as I have constantly had to drive round it.
Ten days ago I happened to walk past it and noticed that the license disc ran out in October 2005.
Feeling perhaps a little guilty I reported it on the DVLA website and lo and behold, today it has gone.
As a law abiding tax payer I think that is result.
Well done DVLA.

Do not feel guilty you did the right thing. I have and will continue to report these people. Why should I pay road tax, mot and insurance. When these people do not bother then they are involved in a rta. Do they care (no) and it is yourself that is left to sort out the mess and they get a few points on there licence if they have one that is and a £200 fine.

If I had my way anybody driving without road tax, mot, and insurance (say 2 months overdue) should have at least a 6 month jail sentence.

Hope the owner don't find ya! Did you get a thankyou from the police for doing their job.

I actually saw a silver Audi 80 being abandoned just around the corner from me a couple of weeks ago, although I could not tell what was happening at the time. Parked on a single yellow line and on the pavement, it quickly collected a parking ticket in an area where parking wardens are rarely seen, so I guess someone reported it. After three days I reported it as an abandoned vehicle to the local council, who stickered the windscreen, and a week later it has gone.

This one appeared to have a valid tax disc. The bodywork was in good nick and the interior not bad. The council officer said that it does have a legitimate current owner. I just hope they give him what he deserves. He was being helped by someone in a high-vis jacket with a large "SECURITY" label on his back.

Is this anti-social practice on the increase again?

I must be the only one who is intruiged by them. Couldn't give two, erm, figs if it's legal or not, if it's got anything useful on it then I'm having it.

Abandoned by legitimate owner or after being ahem "borrowed"? Isn't it unusual to dump a car if it still has tax, is in good nick and where liable for a parking fine if it is tracable back to you?

suffolk police have this to say about this:
www.suffolk.police.uk/Information+And+Services/

There is a car in my road which has been there for a few days and seems to be abandoned. What should I do?

Take a look at the vehicle and make a note of the following:

1.The registration number
2.Whether there is a current tax disc displayed
3.Is the vehicle locked?
4.Is there any damage to the vehicle - inside or outside?

Then call us on 01473 613500 and we will check to see if it is stolen or suspicious.

If it is not reported stolen, the Environmental Health Department at your local council can serve a seven-day notice on the vehicle. If it is not moved within those 7 days, the council can then arrange to remove it and have it scrapped.

People are starting to remove parts such as hubcaps and wheels from a car, which has been abandoned. What should I do?

This is theft even though the vehicle appears to have been abandoned. If you actually witness this happening please call us on 999 with a full description of those responsible. We will try to attend as quickly as possible to deal with those concerned.

If this has happened some time ago, call us on 01473 613500 and tell the operator what you saw. We will then make appropriate enquiries.

Yeah? And?

Anyway I live in Surrey.

;-)

But in all seriousness, I'm not going to lose any sleep about taking some bits from a dumped car.

Probably about 3 days later!

Near me there is an old crocks type delivery van that is in such good condition as to probably be an imitation one. But tell me, are vehicles over a certain age exempt from displaying a tax disk?

You've guessed it.
Unlicensed vehicle removal. - tr7v8
Yes everything should display a tax disc even if tax exempt like pre 73 historic vehicle etc.
As for the Audi, I'm confused if I park a car wih valid tax on it legally & it's insured etc. how can it be deemed dumped!

does that means that if you lived in sufolk you would be happy to be called a thief? ;-)
in all seriousness, now i know why surrey is classed as one of the lowest crime area in the uk !
they must define theft differently there. ;-)
Unlicensed vehicle removal. - cumfray1
In Surrey it's not called theft, it's called borrowing without giving back. :-)
