I am sure this has been covered before but can't find it searching.
Son was sick in car yesterday (typically after 5 hours driving he was sick a mile from the house).
As soon as I got back I cleaned seat with baby wipes, then used car upholstery foamer cleaner but today seat still has sick smell on it. I have put shake n vac on it but that hasn't made much of a difference. Can I get rid of the sick smell or do I need to just make the seat smell of something else?
Anyone any ideas? Being a Scenic, I have removed the seat and it is now in my living room so not restricted to only being able to work on it in the car.

As you have the seat out of the car wash it with washing powder,Daz/Persil with very hot water getting it very very wet, then hose it down until all the soap comes out, this can take quite a long time because of all the foam padding, then just let it dry, this can take anything upto a week depending on drying conditions but do not put back into the car untill bone dry.
The only way to get rid of the smell is to get rid of the source, this method allways works.

When one of my cats is sick, one of the others usually eats up the mess.
So, if you have more than one child.....

Aswell as the otehr methods, white spirit vinegar is a harmless way of destroying such organic deposits. It can be used as a stage in say using the rug doctor machine. The vinegar smell will only last a day as it readily decomposes into odourless gases.

Who knows? Only have one child though, who's never car-sick.
Cats sometimes eat their meals too quickly, then bring up immediately afterwards, hence still edible!!!! Sorry to go into details.

You can't beat 1001 carpet cleaner spray for jobs like this

For cleaning the cat or the car seat?

Absolutely classic SofaSpud!!! LoL

I would book your car in to your local main dealer for a menu service, and insist they carry out a wash and an interior valet....
|
Agreed 1001 is great. I spilt some coffee on one of SWMBO's Persian rugs a few weeks ago (you may remebmer my concern in IHAQ). Good stuff, well worth keeping a bottle in the house for emergenices.
|
If it is just the smell that remains, try one of the fabric "refreshers" which do a good job in removing nasty smells. ie Febreeze
|
Well so far I have
1. cleaned with baby wipe
2. used car upholstery cleaner
3. shake n vac'd it
4. bought Neutradol today and sprayed it
5. washed with lots of hot soapy water
Seat is now drying in front of a fan heater. I will let you know how things develop..

|
biological powder mixed as a paste poltice
|
|
>>Febreeze>>
This acts in a very similar way to air fresheners i.e. it tends to mask the smell rather than get rid of it in the same way as Neutradol and comparable products.
Incidentally anyone who uses Febreeze can buy a similar type of product at Lidl for half the price...:-)

I remember it well - I recommended 1001 then, and stick by it (even if it is more than half a crown!!)
Get some!!

I see your keeping an eye on this thread barchettaman! getting any sleep yet?

Presuming you have scooped up the mess and got rid of the stain on the cloth you can then neutralise the odour left behind (it may have soaked into the foam beneath the cloth) with a spray.
I used Holts "Odor Kill" as a second attempt when I had this particular issue in my last car - made the car stink of pine but it did kill it.
The volatility of the smell will break down in time anyway.
However, as someone has already mentioned if you have the time and are prepared to pay, the best method is a proper wet valet pronto
|
As TVM has pointed out, Neutradol will kill the smell permanently; alternatives are Banish or Oust, whilst Morrisons does its own version at about half the price (65p). Still to try the latter yet though until the Neutradol is empty.

my current car has just had a jelly Neutradol on the back transmission tunnel since i bought it.The car was thick with cigar smoke,i didnt know before i bought it,but the jelly has completely removed the smell and being now a non smoker i even forgot to empty the ashtray.it has leather upholstery otherwise i would have valeted it when i got it.
|
Well seat all dried out now and no trace of sick smell. Don't know if it will re-appear though once the Neutradol etc have worn off!
Thanks for your suggestions (most of which I think I used!)
|
>>once the Neutradol etc have worn off!>>
It won't "wear off" - it kills the bacteria that causes the smell...:-)
