Mondeo 1.8 TD starts then cuts out - AdamP
Hi has anyone come across this problem before?
My 95 Mondeo 1.8 TD was left unused for a month and ever since it has had problems starting.
It starts first time everytime, but then 5 seconds later the revs drop and it cuts out. when i attempt to restart it turns over but doesn't start and takes about 3 or 4 attempts before it starts after which it runs fine.
When the problem first occured it was just in the mornings when it was cold from not being used overnight, but it has progressively got worse and now happens everytime it is started even when the engine is warm.
Any help identifying the problems would be great and if anyone knows how it can be fixed then thats even better.
Cheers

Sounds like the classic priming pump diaphragm leak. On top of the fuel-filter housing is a round plastic button for priming the system. It's diaphragm deteriorates over time and it eventually starts to let in air around that button.

Fit a plastic bag over the button's housing and seal it absolutely airtight with a roll of tape . After it's sucked all the air out of the bag, that should keep you going until you can get a new filter head after Christmess.

They're around £30 from places like LSUK. You might even get one at a factors.

Yep I would second that, I had some friends staying and they parked nose up my drive and the car would not start the next day. I primed it for them and I could hear the air being sucked in when I pressed the button. I put it on the flat. Primed it, cleaned around the bottom and filled the gap with silicon rubber and away they went. Then when they had completed their holiday up here in Scotland they had the pump changed. Regards Peter And a Very Happy Christams and Properous New Year to you all.

Excellent, a cheap simple solution, they're the kind i like!!
I shall try that today, and it does make sense as i had heard a funny gurgling noise coming from the primer.
Cheers thanks for your help, Merry Christmas.
