I have a hybrid '7 type' car. It has a Triumph 1200 chassis, 2 seater ali body and the engine is from a 1955 TR2 (TS6779F engine no.) The inlet manifold & carb have been modified and it now has a single carb, SU hif44, 1 3/4". This doesn't work well. I would like to revert back to the original twin 1 1/2" H4 SUs and have been offered some from a Spitfire. I wasn't sure whether they are 1 1/4" or 1 1/2". Does anyone know which size were used, or which other Triumphs used 1 1/2" carbs?

Spitfire carbs are not big enough ,TR2's had a 2.2 4 cylinder engine the biggest spitfire was 1.5 .Try looking for pair from a vitesse six cylinder these should fit quite well.

According to the Haynes SU book,
TR2 1991cc 4cylinders 1953-1955 2 x H4 carburettors, with FV needles and Red Springs.
If you find these difficult to come by, I would also consider using two HIF4 carbs from an MGB.

Burlen Fuel Systems might be a good place to start for advice & bits www.burlen.co.uk/ They are the SU experts.

I would confirm that the engine size is 1991cc, not 2.4. So what size/type were on the Spitfire?

club.triumph.org.uk May be helpful. Regards Peter

The Dolomite Sprint had twin 1&3/4" SU's though that also had 16v's and 6500 redline, I would have though that twin 1&1/2's would be fine for your application.

According to the Haynes book, Spitfires used HS2s until the 1500, which used HS4s. It doesn't list what carbs were used on the Triumph Vitesse models though.
Hope that helps,

Thanx for that info Cruncher. Regards Dave

Vitesses and a lot of other Triumphs used Strombergs.(Zenith vearible venturi carb).

Whatever Carbs are fitted from whatever vehicle with 1.5" carbs. The needles and springs would have to be sorted to suit the TR2 engine regardless whether the Vitesses or Sprints had 2ltr or not. As the engines are totally different.
There used to be a company who specialised with Triumphs 'SAH', try having a look in the 'Practical Classic Car Mag' or others which specialise in restorations.
