Hope someone can help us out here. A friend bought an MG Rover 1.8 two weeks ago from a garage, which I won't name.
This morning, the clutch went. Warranty was taken with the car as it is a Rover! Call the garage, but the guy there has just said that the warranty doesn't cover clutch breakages.
Now, I appreciate that this is probably the case, but seeing as it was a dealership are they not responsible for making sure that the car was fit for sale? I'm not sure on the sales of second hand car, but is it too late for her to reject the car?
I wouldn't normally get involved with this for her, but the guy has made her cry now as is saying she's on her own.

When you say the clutch "went" - does this mean it didn't just wear out?
Most warranties will state that they do not cover "wear and tear" - the question is was this through wear and tear or was it a failure? Does the warranty documentation explicity state that the clutch isn't covered?
I'm not pretending I know any of the answers but a little more information might help out someone else here. Can you tell us a little more about the age and the mileage of the car?
All I can say is that when I had a clutch wear out on a Nissan I sourced the part myself and had a nice little independent garage fit, rather than going to the dealer. It was the difference between £300 and £100. Of course, I can't see you having Rover work done at a dealer *sigh*

A couple of pointers:
Mileage and age of the car (actual model may help). Presumably it's a second hand car?
Nature of clutch failure if known.
What does the warranty cover / exclude in respect of clutch failure?
Get the answers to those questions, post them here and you should get some worthwhile answers.

I would have thought that due to the very short lenght of time she has had the car she would have a very good case to reject it. Go for it. Take advice from trading standards and push hard.

If it is less than 6 months since purchase the new consumer rights act deems the fault to have been present when the car was purchased. You can reject the car or insist that the dealer fixes it.

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I've not had more details for you, but I've been getting bits and pieces through messenger and still not sure what actually has happend to the car.
Think she's going to reject the car, and hope that the garage will deal with it.
