This is probably one of the silliest questions ever asked in the Backroom, but . . .
I'm planning to be on holiday in the USA next year. I thought to myself "I'd quite like to drive a PT Cruiser once in my life. Would it be possible to hire one while on holiday in the USA?". (I know, I know . . .)
A quick Google indicated that the answer would probably be "yes" if I was flying to California or Texas or Florida or some such location - but I'm planning to fly to somewhere not a million miles from Washington DC or Philadelphia.
Can anyone make any suggestions? (Other than telling me to see my doctor, sit in a dark room, etc.)

I have just returned from the US,I was given a PT cruiser as my rental car, like you have always fancied driving one, but now having driven one would not want to again, found it was very poor on acceleration (even allowing for auto gearbox), once moving braking was poor, heavy pressure required, the suspension was soft with quite a lot of bodyroll on conering. Several people, (all other cruiser owners)on seeing the car approached me all they all wanted to was complain about theirs and ask what problems I had had with mine. If you still want one try Dollar, as they seen to have plenty available.

Dollar rent Chrysler cars pretty much exclusively so they're probably the best place to look. My advice would be to forget the PT and pay a little bit more for a 300C.

I nearly brought one in the UK. I found it OK although this was a 2.2 CRD Manual. Didn't feel the suspension was too bad & I was an Alfa driver then & a Porsche driver now, brakes should be quite good as it's big discs all round. All I can assume is that the US car is very different to the UK one.

I got a good deal from Dollar on Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 V8, every conceivable extra inc sat nav, loads of room, again a Chrysler group car, ok only 15mpg though at $3/gal no problem.

Thanks all.
Mike, I guess if I can't get one, your post will be a great comfort! By the way, which airport in the US did you fly into?
|
Its a 'retro' body stuck on a Neon platform isn't it? Not sure why it would be a particularly attractive proposition to rent. I would have thought there were more interesting things out there.
BTW, I think the US and UK cars are basically the same. All built in Mexico.

Bearing in mind HJ's review on the 300C, you HAVE to hire one in the US.

We hired a 300 in the US.
Was great... for 300 yards. Then we found out the aircon didnt work, took it back, and they didnt have another one.
We got a Jeep Grand Cherokee instead :( They claimed it was an upgrade - it damn well wasn't :(

remember when booking a car here,, it always says pt cruiser or similar , there no gaurentee thats what you get, your booking a car that size thats all
and if you rent when you get there the insurance options can be very confusing
|
oh and i doubt the cruiser is worth chasing after, as long a you dont book the most basic car , it should be fairly nice
some times weve booked a meduim car for 2 weeks, then when you get there , you will find specalists that have mustang coverables and other nice flash car, weve just rented something like that for a day or weekend...even had a viper gts once

Well, two years later, I finally got one. I decided to rent with Alamo, mostly because they were cheap, but partly because I knew that Alamo let you choose any car they have available in the category you choose. I chose the cheapest category, which was described as "Hyundai Accent or similar".
Well, lo and behold, in the row of cars we had been directed to, there was a PT Cruiser in a tasteful shade of blue (something like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Chrysler_PT_Cruiser.jpg ) So, scorning all the undoubtedly superior vehicles beside it, we grabbed it.
