VW Golf 02 - Water Ingress - frmarcus
Hi: Recently the driver's and driver's rear footwells have been soaking when it rains. The passenger-side footwells are fine. The driver's footwell is dry around the pedals - so water probably isn't coming in from the front, and I can see no evidence of water penetration from the doors. But there's a pool of water in the driver's rear footwell - presumably from last night's torrential rain (happened a few times - keep soaking water up...). There's a sunroof - but no evidence of water leaking through it, and the lower internal sides of the car, above and around the footwells, all feel dry.

Any ideas gratefuly received!

Many thanks!

The ubiquitous VAG group pollen filter leak would be my starting point.

failing that - blocked drains from the sunroof.

Hi, The pollen filters dont leak on the golfs what you will probably need to do is lower the head lining and you will find the drains from the sunroof become separated, they have like a ball joint fixing. VW fit the pipes so tight that they come apart after a few years you will need to pull up a bit of slack from the rear pipes then fit them back together and put some elephant tape around the join to avoid them parting again! Hope this helps!!!

I am used to VW's leaking water. You will need to remove the front seats (and possibly the rear bench) and remove your carpets, for drying. You don't want all that water staying under your carpets going mouldy and rusting the car from the inside.

If I were you once having removed the carpets , and replaced the front seats (to drive the car whilst you wait for your carpets to dry, sit in the car and hose pipe the car roof, watch for the water.

If it is your sunroof, this is the reason I hate buying a car with a sunroof, lets face it they are useless features, and only offer an opportunity for something to go wrong in the cars later life.

Hi,
I also had problems with this on a 02 Golf, took it back to the dealer and they fitted new door seals and a membrane inside the door, this solved the problem. They also admitted it was a common problem ?? All done under warranty.

Yes, this is also a known problem on Seat Leons.

It was also a problem on Mk II Golfs and Jettas...:-)

I had a big bumper 1990 Jetta TX that suffered exactly the same problem.

The VW dealership that did the work (in about 1996 or 1997) said that VW had had a bad batch of membranes and it was very common.

Must be still using up old stock...:-)

This has happened to us too (MkIV Y reg). Our local non-franchised VW/Audi garage, purged the sunroof drains some months ago but it has just happended again. I can see droplets under the dashboard on the drivers side and am presuming there is some sort of blockage from the back of the engine bay/bonnet hinge areas and when the rain really starts coming down, the water is finding somewhere else to go. The trouble is it is tonking down at the moment so I won't be able to have a good poke around until it stops. I just hope the water level doesn't rise much further in the car!

Anybody know if I am on the right track with the source being in the engine bay/bonnet hinge area?

mk2s rot between the dash and bottom of windsceen, sit in front seat and try to look at gap where dash meets the window in the corners,if you look hard you can just see into gap,if it is rusty looking, then dash will have to come out to see the rot,if you cant see rust, then you should be safe enough, you will have to look else where, good luck..
