I had a Skoda Octavia for three years until June, it is about the same size as a Xantia, and your budget should easily get you an old shape SLX or Elegance model with 110bhp VAG turbodiesel engine as used in Golfs and Audi's, but a lot cheaper. i part exchanged my W reg with 110,000 miles in tatty condition for £2,000 in June, i guess it retailed at just under £3,000.
50mpg easily, but not quite as reliable as the surveys would suggest in my experience. Huge boot, comfy, and that model has lecky windows all round, climate control and a CD player. Watch out for ex-cabs though if you're picky. Mine was, but it was cheap.
Someone will say Mondeo TDCI, possibly tongue in cheek, it's a running gag here. Probably out of your price range.

Having bought a 99 406 HDi at the beginning of August,I virtually immediately launched into out family holiday of 10 days in France, and what with me,SWMBO,and the 2 kids, and a boot full of everything,I did just short of 1500 miles, and it returned +50mpg.
Can't argue with that in terms of fuel consumption.
As it's only an LX model,I still get cd player, air con, leccy front windows, leccy mirrors, rain sensitive wipers, remote locking. Not bad in my opinion, coupled with Peugeots legendary engine, you can't go wrong.
I was lucky though.I bought it at auction,at a good price, and yes,I've had to do a few things to it,that the former owner neglected, like a service,(Which I did myself.) but it's probably the nicest car I've ever owned.

any other cars or input anyone please
thank you

I reckon you hit the nail on the head with your suggested cars.
Maybe worth trying a Skoda diesel, seeing as it's basically a VW engine.

Rover 75.
Thing of beauty. Cheap.
Available with automatic transmission.
All BMW.
Can't go wrong
