Anti-roll bar? The Fabia has just failed its MOT on it. It felt perfectly fine to me when I dropped the car off to them

I'm a bit suspicious as when I dropped the car in, the service bloke was telling someone else that theirs needed replacing. Do Skodas have a bad reputation for these or does my dealer have a technician who needs to practice a few at our expense.

Also, does anyone know of a decent independent VAG/Skoda specialist in the West Yorks/Manchester area who I could trust with the car? I'm really fed up with main dealers.

Its a bendy bit which stops your car flopping all over the place.

This might be a more technical answer....

More likely it failed on the bushes then on the bar itself.

Bullen Bros in Bury, near Fairlfield Hospital VAG specialist
I&C Corlett in Norden near Rochdale 01706 647164. Not a VAG specialist but really nice people and a new anti-roll bar wouldn't tax them at all.
No connection with either other than being a happy customer.

New bushes needed I would think, rare to find a broken or bent anti roll bar, unless its been involved in nasty front/side clout

Thanks for the replies - good link, now a bit wiser!

I've had the bushes replaced a on ZXs - interesting what steve says, I'm certain it's not clouted anything as it's only me that drives it and I'm certain I'd recall that!

Thanks for the tips, Rochdale is handy for me and Bury is where the car is having an expensive holiday - not a millions miles either.

Cheers

If only you'd done it closer to Christmas. You could have co-ordinated it with the Christmas BR meet!

>>Closer to Chrimbo
Didn't have much choice with the MOT ;-)

Has anyone organezized anything yet for a Chrimbo meet not at TGI Fridays?

Nope. I hadn't thought too much about it other than we definitely need to have one.

you were meant to organise it......................

Lee,
How old is the Fabia? Is it worth getting a second opinion? Our cars all do over 100k before replacement and only once have I replaced AR bar bushes. Have you thought about DIY - I did it on a BX (which had done well over 100k) and it was quite easy - though that might have been because you can take all the pressure out of the suspension system, not sure if same applies on a normally sprung car.

I'd have thought most ordinary ones are easy to replace the bushes. You need to jack up both wheels equally, so that there is no net torsion in the bar. Ones I've done were just like a large bulldog grip with a simple rubber bush trapped in place.

Hi Phil,

It's a 51 and has only done 35k. I'm deeply suspicious, especially after the conversation I overheard (first post) but I'm knackered really. The MOT expires today so I'm stuck doing what they tell me. I can only take solice that it's just the anti-roll bar they're gouging me for.

I think the lesson is to not have the MOT done the day before it expires.

If you saw how long it took me to connect our dishwasher (replacing a broken dishwasher), you'd understand why DIY isn't really an option for me!!

Thanks

"I think the lesson is to not have the MOT done the day before it expires."

That's a very good lesson which I also keep ignoring, to my expense...

I am sure many know this, but for those that do not,you can have your MOT done up to a month before it is due without affecting the expiry date,i.e.13 month M.O.T.(or a month to do repairs).

Update. I remembered that I've had the car less than a year (by three days, but still) so rang the dealer and asked them to investigate the warranty.

Turns out it's covered so no charge for the anti-roll bar.

Result.

Thanks to all for the advice, but Nsar could you pass me some more details for the Bullen Bros, I'll give them a whirl next time.

Cheers again

Haven't got their number to hand, but they'll be in the book. You can find them about a mile from Fairfield Hospital in the direction of Bury on Bury and Rochdale Old Road. Open 5 days plus Sat AM. They always seem v busy, so book ahead. I believe one of them used to be service mngr at Smith Knight Fay.
You could also try Castlefield Garage in Bury town centre, just off Bolton St. If you do and you deal with Keith (Europe's grumpiest man), tell him he owes Nigel from the Pack Horse a pint. Good luck
