Where is the rev counter on a Picasso? - tyro
I have a Citroen Picasso Desire as a courtesy car. It came without the owner's handbook, leavning me baffled about various things.

I checked the Citroen UK website to see if there was a downloadable owner's handbook pdf, but couldn't find one. (Why do manufacturer's websites have nothing at all useful on them?)

Anyway, I can't see a rev counter on the digital display. Anyone know what buttons I push to get one?

And by the way, I saw an orange triangle flashing out of the corner of my eye as I took a sharp bend. Any idea what it is?

Thanks.

I don't think Picassos have rev' counters.

As for the orange triangle, beats me. ABS or traction control maybe?

I can confirm that no Picasso has a built in Rev Counter.

Loads of cars don't have rev counters.

Base model Fiestas from the 90's along with Escorts too spring to mind.

Not so long ago probably the majority of family cars didn't have rev counters. Certainly within my family extended as far as uncles and aunts, from my youth I recall only a couple that did and they were 'sporty' (ahem) numbers such as Cortina GTs or Capris. To this day I know many a driver that doesn't use their rev counter, despite most cars now having them.

On a related track, a cousin of mine was married a couple of weeks back, and one of the wedding cars was a brand spanking new Rolls Royce Phantom. One of the many things I loved about the car was having a 'power reserve' meter in lieu of a rev counter; this gauge showed the percentage of power still available to give, rather than someting so terribly vulgar as how fast the engine was currently rotating. Classy and brilliant in equal measure.

I can certainly confirm Pablo Picasso does not have a rev counter. His paintings are well received critically, but personally (having been in the art business for 27 years) I think they are terrible. Perhaps adding a rev counter might improve them.

Are we sure it hasn't got one? Isn't there a bar chart type affair near the speed readout?

I dunno but Steve has one.

I could not drive a car with a rev counter. After all I accelerate flat out to 30mph in 1st: about 5,000rpm .. the rev limiter kick in a 6,500 so I'll be speeding..

Waste of time imo for any family car.. rev limiters do the work... anyone who needs a rev counter to tell them they are labouring an engine is - imo - mechanically unadept...:-)

The C5 has a rev counter, but I seldom look at it - only really out of curiosity to see what sort of figure the (diesel) engine is running at (low - stress free most of the time!) As regards using the rev counter to actually influence my gear changing, however, I must confess that I've never seen the point! I reckon I instinctively know when to change gear - probably better than aiming for any 'ideal' figure on a rev counter. I take great pride in never allowing the engine to labour - yet I spin the diesel up on regular occasions to keep the engine clean. I've been driving for 33 years and I've never had to replace a clutch on any of my cars - even after 100,000 miles plus on one.

(Insufferable smugness that will inevitably have a sweet sticky smell oozing from the bellhousing tomorrow morning........)

The flashing triangle might be the ESP (stability program) cutting in. My one sometimes does this on a sudden tight bend with a bit of camber.

Thanks all.

Well, one lives and learns. My Ford Ka doesn't have a rev counter, but I thought that was just because it was a VERY cheap car. But I thought that once you got out of the realm of the very cheap, all cars had them. I don't need a rev counter of course - I only look at it out of curiousity - but then I am the sort of chap who is filled with curiousity about all sorts of odd things.

Graeme is right about the flashing triangle being ESP. The signs all light up for a second when one turns on the ignition, so I was able to check it out. Amazing that. The first time in my life I drive a car with ESP, and it kicks in on the 2nd day!

Here was me thinking that the Picasso had Extra Sensory Perception. But there again it is a Citroen!

My personal suspicion is that the power reserve gauge on the Rolls Royce is nothing more than a rev counter mounted upside down.

Yes, reserve of torque would be far better. Didn't the Corvette once have an LCD rev counter in the shape of the torque or power curve?

I'm pretty sure I saw one of thos fancy torque curve shaped digital tachos on a GM europe product - probably the Opel Monza or early astra mk2 GTE.

The 1980s Celica Supra MA61 has one, and a digital speed display which can do the mph/kph trick too.

Rev counter is available as an optional extra in a seperate pod on top of the dash - I saw one on a car driven by a deaf driver.
There is a way to display engine revs on the main display - for more details go to the Unofficial Picasso owners site and search in the technical section.

Odd that Berlingos have rev counters but not Picasso - why?

On a recent short holiday, I hired a Toyota Echo. Nice car, very sitting up straight style of driving, but again, no rev counter. All my cars have them, so I missed it a bit. The clutch bite was well off the floor, the opposite to my Mini. The engine was fairly quiet, too, so progress was a little jerky until I got used to it. The other problem was that it had only just enough power to get around. Fifth gear was fine for cruising but had no acceleration at all. I got it up to about 70 mph in fourth gear, passing a lorry, but with no rev counter, I had no idea if it was about to expire. Even in fourth, the acceleration was very gradual. This also had VVTi markings, so it should have been a bit peppy. The lack of a rev counter and the quiet engine made it a bit of a mystery to drive.

Fully named it's the Xsara Picasso, and other Xsaras (Xarae?)sport a rev counter. Styling issue when they went for the digital central display. Are there any mainstream cars sporting a digital tacho?

The tacho on our 1.8D Berlingo was invaluable for keeping in the torque band during a recent camping trip to Provence.

You can get a digital speedo/tacho on my Focus by cycling through the menus.

In fact, you can do this on any Ford with a digital odometer.

Adam,
How do you cycle the digital display on a Focus? (Mine came with the manual for a Fiesta, which is less than forthcoming on the subject..)
Thanks
Where is the rev counter on a Picasso? - Adam {P}
Alastair, you're in luck. It just so happens that I have to tell anyone and everyone who strays near the subject of the dials all about them as Ford, in their wisdom, decided not to put that in the manual.

Yes. The Yaris has a LCD "bar" style graphical tachometer combined with a digital speedometer in the centrally mounted instrument pod.

"centrally mounted instrument pod"

I saw this on the Yaris, I?ve also seen it on a few others, Chevy Spark or Daewoo whatever it?s badged as and the odd little Chrysler Ypsilon. Personally, I couldn?t get along with a car that had centrally mounted instruments. Does anybody drive one regularly? What do they think? Just curious.

I'm on my second Picasso and I have no problem with the central display, it was strange for the first week or so but it seems normal now. The only downside is that all the passengers can see how fast you are going.

One prank to play is to set the speed to Km/h, the wife gets a bit nervous when see thinks we are travelling at 120MPH.

For the first 15 mins or so in the Yaris it was a bit weird (my first experience of a central display) but after that it becomes second nature. The Yaris' binnacle is angled towards the driver and also recessed (unlike the Picasso's which is pretty "flat") so only the driver or a passenger immediately behind can read the display.

Interesting about the C3 handbook. The handbook for my Berlingo is also very poor. I was really quite surprised that Citroen UK would send out something of such abysmal quality.

(I mean, at least with the cars, if they are badly built, it usually takes a few months before failings start showing up. With the handbook it only took seconds to see that it was a sloppy effort.)
