Your help as ever would be appreciated.
The power steering on my golf is producing that familiar whining noise, it doesn't get any better when the car gets warm etc..
I have checked underneath and it appears to have had the power steering pump replaced and the fluid LOOKS OK (e.g there is some in there and its clear etc)
Please can someone give me a few pointers on where to go next ?
Cheers

Hi, Checked last night and it does look black when its in a bottle after all. I have drained the whole system and refilled with new fluid. Problems is the same. Someone suggested it might be that the steering rack is putting too much presure on the pump hence the noise. If thats the case I'll just be leaving it as a steering rack replacement on a £400 wouldn't be worth while..

Could be Dave, any rules on checking it or guidelines please ?

According to my Bently manual, for 4 cylynder engines:-
'On a 4 cylinder engines, a belt is used to drive the power steering pump. Check the condition, cracks etc......Check the V belt tension by applying firm thumb pressure to the area of the belt between the two pulleys that are furthest apart. Adjust belt tension if required.'
It then gives the following figures:
Belt Deflection (used belt) = approx 5mm (3/16 in.)

Thats Bentley as in the publisher of my Golf maintenance manual and not a manual for a (4 cylinder!)Bentley.

Phew, thanks for clarifying. Will check and report back..
Cheers for that.
