Insurance on new car - Citroënian {P}
Hi all,

We should be picking up the new car this week. Our insurance docs haven't arrived yet although we do have an active policy for the new car bought over t'Interweb.

Question: if we don't get the insurance docs through by time time we pick up the car, can the garage get the car taxed anyway? - Do they have a company policy or something that would allow them to do this?

Would appreciate some advice.

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure you need to provide the insurance certificate ahead of time. I picked up a new car last week and that is what I had to do. I called up on a Wednesday to change the insurance, the certificate turned up on the Friday.

Thanks Steve,

I know that's the usual way of doing it, but we've been massively messed around by the garage - does anyone with knowledge of the trade know if they can sort the tax out using their insurance?

Bought my car last October and it came with a new tax disc dated from the day I bought it. Never gave it a second thought, but now beginning to wonder how they did it...

My new car came with a dealer supplied tax disc, not from DVLA but issued on their behalf by the dealer, but it had to be done on my insurance and not theirs.

If it's a brand new car it will be taxed through the AFRL system whilst being registered but if it's used then someone will need to go down the post office to tax it.

In both cases they will need a copy of your insurance certificate - theoretically a dealer is no longer able to tax a used car using his trade insurance. With a new car being taxed the dealer has a little bit more leeway than the old dear's down the post office - ie tax it from a faxed copy etc. It's not strictly legit but it does happen!

We got a new car last Sept 1st and we had to take the certificate in beforehand - they wouldn't work from a fax. I *think* they do it all in house now (including printing the tax disk?) but they still wanted the Ins Cert in advance - I guess, stricty speaking, they can't register the car until they've got that?

I'm sure anything is possible in reality, but the dealer told me that the lady who does these things in their dealership insists on the documentation being correct. We have a lady like that at work too, so I could understand where he was coming from :-)

Yes it is all done inhouse now and strictly speaking no we can't do it without the insurance certificate however.........

A work colleague had to insure his brand new car a week before it was even delivered to the dealer, so that they could tax it before the month end and hence make their registration target. The did give him a free courtesy car for his trouble though (he had given his old car to his son and was hence carless because of the delay)

Thanks all (especially Armitage), it looks like they can sort it at a push.

But then we'll have to wait and see. This is the second dealer I've tried to buy this car from and they've been every bit as useless as the first one - more so in some respects.

Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again
