going to look at some tonight good news is they have no tyres so i can see the rims, anything to watch out for that might result in a bad wheel (vibrations)
and also the lacuer is coming off them, how do i fix this myself as i understand its expensive to get someone to do it for you.
even if i don't replace the lacuer and just take the old off, is that ok?
thank you

No. The lacquer is there to form a protective barrier to stop the aluminium oxidising.

ah, i understand its £60 a wheel to get done, any cheaper ideas?
|

Yes look around £20 a wheel for refirb in Bradford, but it is better to by good ones in the first place.I personally would have alloy wheels they are heavier than steel ,somebody always wants to pinch them and they are to easy to damage.

I MISSED THE WORD "NOT"OUT AS IN NOT HAVE

Wouldn't have?
I understood that alloy wheels were lighter than steel to reduce the unsprung weight - isn't this true? If they are heavier, they must be worse than a waste of time!
|
I had all 4 of my alloys refubished for £100 all in, and that was not at some backstreet place. It included gritblasting, painting and laquering. £60 a wheel sounds a lot per wheel.
There are some companies on the FAQ on this fourm click here... www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/faq.htm?id=23
FYI i used lap-tab which is mentioned on this site.

>>> I understood that alloy wheels were lighter than steel to reduce the unsprung weight - isn't this true? If they are heavier, they must be worse than a waste of time!
In most cases, for standard cars, using standard manufacturers' alloys, there is negligible weight saving to be had from alloy wheels. If you go out to buy non-standard light alloy wheels, then there is a weight saving to be had.
In most cases, I consider them purely to be a cosmetic add on.
One hidden advantage to alloys is that they are more likely to run true, having being machined to their final shape.
There are a few other features of modern cars which are there purely to make them easier to market, while the public at large think there is some performance benefit.

correct on the whole alloys weigh in at roughly one third more than steel ,they just look nicer.Naturly aluminium alloys weigh less than steel by volume but you need lots more to get the same strength

I'm surprised people bother - I have never had alloy wheels, but assumed they were to reduce u/s weight. If they don't, it must be counter-productive! What's whong with easily-replaceable plastic trims? Haven't any makers made pressed alloy trims?
|
Depends on the quality (price) of the wheels I guess. From an earlier post:-
MX5 steel wheels (I have a feeling these are an 'option'?) 18lbs
"standard" alloys 12.3lbs
Factory Optional BBS alloys 8.5lbs
All the above 14".

What to look for:
1. Cracking. VITAL. If any are cracked (check rims and centres all round..reject themall. Either bad driving - hitting kerbs - or a manufacturing defect.
This is absolutley essential.
2. Corrosion.
a. around rim where tyre seals. If it's badly corroded, tyres will deflate. Reject.
b. around edge: parking damage or weights damage: reject. Possible source of cracks. Safety issue.
c. Visual corrosion on decoartive side. If it's bad why bother buying as seller is not prepared to recondition them.
3. No centre hole. If no hole in centre of wheel (Citroen Alloys for example) balancing is more difficult. Avoid.
4. Misuse> Around the nut fixing holes. Any signs of hole opening, cracking or wear/corrosion? Walk away. Safety issue.
If you buy abused or corroded alloys you are wasting your money and time imo.

BTW: you do know about wheel offset?
If you don't, buy nothing until you do.
Wheels with the wrong offset for your car will not fit properly. So v unsafe.

i've been quoted £150 for all 4 wheels to be refurnished.
these are ford wheels anyway so will fit.
problem is the price, they are on ebay so i might wait and see what happens with the bidding. i had offered £100 but inlcuding refurishment and tyres the total would be about £650 min
they are 18inch st220 with the lacuer coming off.
|
Reckon they will sell for a lot more than £100, also tyres will cost iro £500.
What year / model / engine is your Mondeo?
|
Assume it is these ...
cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-MONDEO-18-ALLOY-WHEELS-RIMS-C-...m
..... these are not ST220 rather Zetec S, they are split rim wheels and it is the outer rim that corrodes under the laquer so it might only be the outer rim that needs refurbing.
Have a look at the pictures of this set and you will see what I mean.

These look very good:

that's them, just down the road you see.
but at £100 and over they are too much ££
look the dog's dangly's though don't they.
mine is just 1.8lx
|
|
i'm refering to the price of tyres is why £100 is too much
|
nope, they are upto £97 with 1 day to go, so i can't afford them.
shame if i had of given him cash for them there and then i would of had a bargin, just getting them sorted and the tyres was more than i could afford
