I have an 02 mazda 626 estate with rear discs. It appears that the handbrake operates by pushing the disc pads via the piston. A change of pads looks possible by removing the top calliper pin and tilting the calliper. However, what is the procedure for pushing back the handbrake linked poiston and how is the handbrake adjusted after the new pads are installed? All tips gratefully received and does anyone know of a workshop manual or CD (perhaps on the American market)? i have been unable to locate one in the UK. Thank you.

Not sure about yours, but the mx5 and others have a bolt in the rear of the caliper that is removed and inside the hole is an adjuster that takes an allen key to back off the piston. When new pads are in, turn the key until resistance is felt and back off (I think 1/4 of a turn). I think these calipers are fairly common to many vehicles especially Fords.

Some need a special tool that screws the pistons back most good car part shops sell them

Thank you all; I reckon that if I first check the allen screw position then I should be able to return the handbrake to its correct adjustment. I didn't know there was an allen screw there.

Did this on a 'P' reg 626 recently. Pistons were wound back using plumber's pliers to grip exposed part of piston. Adjustment is automatic as you use the footbrake. Can't imagine later models would be that much different.

The above makes me think there is an adjuster and that force wil damage it.
7. Before fitting new brake pads the caliper piston will need to be screwed back into the caliper by an allen-bolt hidden under a hex-bolt at the rear of the caliper. The piston can not be forced back into the caliper by using C-Clamp like the front brakes.

Same difference. Either remove bolt, adjust with allen key & replace bolt or turn piston with pliers to wind back.

But what state will the piston be in after turning it 10 times or so with pliers?
