Claimed power increase - really? - Hawesy1982
In the pub last night a mate of mine was telling me his plans for increasing the power on his car.

It's a 51 plate Peugeot 307 XSi (2.0 138bhp)

After his sandard exhaust fell off, he replaced it with a 'performance' one which he was told should give him about an extra 8bhp. The company he bought it from then suggested that he could get a K&N filter and induction kit, an air intake which actually cools the air as it passes through, and a re-map/chip with the following benefits.

Filter and Induction kit: +12bhp
Air Intake Thingy: +10bhp
Remap/Chip: +30bhp

This would in theory give him a total of almost 200bhp from a normally aspirated 2.0 engine. They don't provide telemetry to back up the power increases however, so the only way to tell what diffence these mods would make would be driving feel.

I was pretty doubtful that these performance boosts could be acheived on a non-turbo car, but he swore blind that this was what they claimed. Are they taking the Michael?

Is he reading the small print that usually says up to 30bhp increase?? Its easy enough to put it on a rolling road for before and after power figures.

I suspect that individual items may add a certain amount of extra power, but you can't just add them up. 200hp from a 2.0 engine is nothing special is it?

Oh for an edit button! {It's alright, mine still works. DD}

He'd be lucky to get a 20% increase in power from a chip on a NA engine. It'd be intersting to know what these figures are based on, I'd imagine guesswork!

I owuld have thought 40bhp top from that lot.

I used to have an 306 XSI with the same engine. Hard to get loads of power out of it.

178bhp still not too bad.

Figures definitely sound a bit ambitious, I'd say more realistically air filter probably more like 2/3bhp, exhaust 5/10hp & the chip probably more like a 10% increase, can't see it reaching 200bhp.

Thats about what i guessed at mountainkat - around 160bhp at best.

They don't have a rolling road at the place he spoke to unfortunately (or perhaps intentionally for them). He seemed confident that they said the figures more as estimates than "up to's".

The thing is he'd be willing to spend the cash for another 60+ bhp (+ nearly 50%), but i don't think he would if he would only got a gain of 20ish.

Yes absolutely, as chip upgrades almost entirely rely on allowing turbo overboost conditioning which is no good if you haven't got a turbo.

an air
intake which actually cools the air as it passes through

I'd be VERY interested to know how that works. Or, more likely, doesn't.

More on subject though - no. It's a popular Barryboy exploit, overestimating what difference small mods will make to performance. The chip for instance - on a turbo car these can make about 20% difference. In a NA, you'll be lucky to see 10%. They can aid the drivability of the car a reasonable amount though.

My thoughts exactly.

Think i'd better show him this thread - my opinion didn't seem to convince him to be sceptical, but maybe a few more similar ones will.

How much is this all going to cost?
I'd imagine minimum £600 - maybe up to £750.
All for an optimistic 25hp increase... I'll be surprised if he sees that much power too.

Pah! If I had all the promised performance benefits from all the golf products I'd bought over the years I'd be hitting the ball further than Tiger Woods.
