BMW 2.2litre chain driven? - Cheeky
Guys,

Quick question:

Am I right in thinking the 2.2litre engines found in the last generation E39 and current E60 5 Series and 3 series (520i and 320i) are chain driven and therefore do not need a cambelt change?

I have just bought a 2001 520i with 60k on the clock and 1 service light remaining, so thought I'd check this out before the next service.

Cheers.

I've just bought a 2001 520i SE 2.2 too! Mine has 72k on the clock. I've only just taken delivery but as far I'm aware I'm 99.9% sure these cars are chain driven and do not require a cambelt change.

The main buying issue with these is getting one after the previous owner has paid for the big Inspection II service, mine was carried out at 60k and only needs an oil service next.

Thanks for that. Yep, Previous owner got the Inpection II done at 53k so oil service only when the last 2 green lights have gone out.

Just out of interest - really weird looking oil dipstick. Had the check oil and top up light come on today, and sure enough it was a bit low. Can't figure out where the hell the MAX mark is though... Handbook not much help as the picture shows a different dipstick. There is a pointy bit at the bottom, and I'm presuming it should fall between the two twisty lines, however there are other possible markers. Any suggestions?

Cheers.

Believe it or not, exactly the same has happened to me! The oil light came on when I switched off the ignition. Apparently the difference between the min and max is something like 1.8 litres and the level on mine was very close to the bottom. You should be able to see a clear lines denoting the min and max.

I added about 1.5 litres of Castrol SLX 0w/30 oil - I was shocked to see it cost £40 at Halfords for 4 litres but its important to use the right oil in these.

I was a bit surprised the oil on mine was low though - maybe the 2.2 uses more oil than the old 2.0 - I had a 1999 520i before and looking at the service history on that one I noticed that it went from 41k right up to 61k without an oil change!

I am noticing that mine is taking up oil more frequently too, I have done 112K on my 2003 2.2L E39, had to top up half litre after almost 600 miles.... sounds like too much?! Still running great but a little worried about the rate at which its taking up oil, anyone experience something similiar?

Also, what the best oil for these? I had to grab some oil in emergency from a service station (Castrol Sport Edge 0W-40), is this ok?

They are chain driven - actually 3 chains - one from the crank to the exhaust cam, one from exhaust to inlet cam and one from crank to oil pump.

The emporers new clothes ,oil at £40 even BMW don not use fancy oils I bet if they put up the price to £100 people would think its even better.

I thought for a glorious moment you ment the car was chain-driven, like those old monsters with enormous open chains driving the back wheels. Wasn't Parry-Thomas killed at Pendine when a chain broke and decapitated him?
