Volvo engine rattle under load. - Boltar
Hi

I own a 2.9 volvo S80. When the engine is warmed up and under load (eg going up a hill) I get a metallic rattling noise from the engine bay which can only be heard when the window is down.
Ie not from within the car. The car doesn't seem to lose any power and nothing else seems to happen. Does anyone know what this could be and what needs to be done to fix it?

Regards

SOunds to me that what you are hearing is "pinking".
This is pre-ignition (of the petrol) within the engine, i.e. it is not igniting at the correct time (the spark from the plug is not occurring at the correct time). What you wil need to do is get the timing done on the car. THis should be possible at any garage.

Isn't the timing all computerised in this model? Its only 4 years old but has done almost 70K miles. Perhaps some sensor is on the way out?

Does sound like pinking. Could be very poor qaulity fuel (unlikely these days) or some problem with the engine management system. Ideally it will need to go on Volvo diagnostics.
