My 2001 130bhp pdi Passat has developed a very rough idle when cold. I drive 1/2 mile in the morning from cold and usually have to stop for about 2 minutes at traffic lights. The idle speed varies when I'm stopped at these lights between about 400rpm and 800rpm and the engine sometimes feels as if it's going to stop. When the car's warm there's no problem and otherwise behaves normally. I'd be grateful for any comments.

Not quite the same problem but my A4 130 pdi behaves strangely when it idles until the engine warms up.
In my case the first few minutes are fine, then, when idle at say traffic lights, the car shakes. The revs are fine - hanging around just under 1000rpm.
This behaviour may carry on for another 10 to 15 minutes and then its fine although some days it will always shake when idle!
I'd be interested to hear from other VAG diesel owners with strange behaviour at idle.

Why not switch off at the lights? Engine innards must be quite cold - and ticking over is not enough to get the engine of a diesel warmed up. I saw this advice on Freds "If one gets stuck in traffic with a cold engine, now there's a dilemma, because the engine won't generate enough heat to warm up. If this happens, one suggestion has been to introduce some electrical load to make the engine work a little harder, like the headlights, rear-window defroster, and heated seats if you have them." Seems a trifle odd to me, but then its cooler in NA, and switching off over there must risk frost-bite.

"Engine innards must be quite cold"
In my case though, its not actually when it's cold. My A4 starts shaking once the temperature passes 75 degrees celcius and subsides after I've been driving for 20 to 30 minutes - whenever I've got a mechanic in the car to demonstrate, it doesn't happen because it takes me too long to get to the garage!

If cars don't heat up when stationary, how come on my car the temperature gauge is jumping around like a dingbat in traffic jams as the fan cuts in and out to try to keep the temperature down?

The electrical load will only require hundreds of Watts of power, not thousands as accelerating/cruising does.

I've got a Passat PD130 Sport and would like to get more information ........ where is 'Fred's TDI web page'...... is there a hyperlink ........ what is the website???? .... more info needed!!!

Try this. The FAQ section is v. helpful. forums.tdiclub.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=2 Could do with a permanent reference/link for troublesome VW's!

David, according to some the VW TDi is so thermally efficient that from cold it won't warm up when idling, once warm it's a different matter I suppose. I suspect that most modern diesels will be the same.

See you have posted your query on FREDS TDI WEB Page, there is a lot of talk on this site, but you have to remeber two things, the engines are at a different spec and the diesel fuel is of a lower grade than UK
