Insurance for Megasquirt on Volvo 360 - pettaw
I'm fed up with the patchy performance and poor cold starting of my Volvo 360, so I'm planning to convert the LE-Jetronic system into Megasquirt, which is a DIY-FI system that you build and solder yourself.

I'm not doing it for performance reasons, but I SUPPOSE it counts as a mod, so I should declare it to my insurance. Its up for renewal in July anyway, so I'll probably fit it and declare it when renewal notices start coming through.

I'm with Direct Line at the moment, and I'll bet they either refuse to insure or hike up by extortionate amounts. I'm 24 BTW.

Anybody know of any insurance companies that take a 'sensible' view to 'mods'.

I'm probably going to see a minimal gain in bhp. I'm still using the same injectors, fuel pump etc. but should hopefully get better, more consistent performance.

There are companies out there who actually give discount for modded cars - try these ones

So what do you think they'll do if you have an accident between fitting it and telling them ? Grin and pay up or refuse to pay for any damage to your vehicle and sue you for anything they have to pay out to anybody else ?

Very friendly I'm sure. Why do you think I'm going to tell them? You should concentrate on berating the people who wouldn't even bother contemplating it.

I shall ring those companies up on Monday.

Hear, hear. Yet another grossly over-the-top response from a forum regular.

You're quite right in thinking that Direct Line won't be good news. Modifications aren't their thing.

The suggested insurers are a good starting point. Also worth trying NFU Mutual - I know people with extensively modified Land Rovers who rate them for their sympathetic view of mods. In a pinch, get a copy of one of the chav scumbag car rags - "Max Power" etc - there are loads of ads in the back for companies that specialise in young drivers and modified cars.

Oh do explain. But do read what I wrote carefully first.

I was rather under the impression that you intended fitting it and telling them later;

"so I'll probably fit it and declare it when renewal notices start coming through"

I was also under the impression that I was referring to exactly that period;

"So what do you think they'll do if you have an accident between fitting it and telling them ?"

Now if you don't intend there to be a gap, then obviously the comments don't apply, if you do intend there to be a gap, then they apply most seriously.

Yep.Got to tell the insurers the moment the "mod" has been done. 3 months later is no good to anybody. Least of all you if you need to claim.

OK right, misunderstanding. I've rebuilt the engine, (to OEM specs) and so am going to run it in anyway before fitting Megasquirt, because you have to do all the mapping yourself, its not worth putting a new built engine under strain whilst you get the fuelling right.

So by the time I get all that done, it'll be renewal time and I can fit it AND declare/get quotes from other insurers at the same time.

However, I still say save your venom for the people who wuoldn't even think about declaring things.

Venom ? What are you whinging on about ? What venom ? Do get over yourself.

I would say that's almost exactly the type of comments I was 'whinging on about.'

pettaw. Have you read Practical Performance Car? They have an ongoing project fitting Megasquirt. Well worth getting back copies if not.
Also, if you have the system mapped on a rolling road then there is no reason why you can't fit it your rebuilt engine. Have fun!

LE Jetronic is such a basic system, you can mod the ECU easily simply soldering in new resistors with a different value, you can change many parameters, you can also prise the top off the AFM and clean the tracks, and adjust the flap's spring tension. Poor cold starting is usually the cold start injector or lift pump in the tank.

LE Jetronic is very basic analogue system and should therefore be easy to modify IF you know which resistors to switch around. I have investigated this and AFAIK I haven't been able to find a book to tell me which resistors do what.

All the cold start stuff, pressure regulator, thermal time switch, cold start inj, etc etc etc has been changed with new and the AFM has been exchanged with known good one with little difference.

I have heard and seen many Volvo 360 B200E's doing this over-rich running at cold start and so reckon its either a common failing or a design fault. Never mind I hooked a resistor/capacitor circuit onto the coolant temp sensor which has affected a cure for the cold start overrich, which will tide me over until MS can go in, insurance quotes being reasonable.

The reason I intend to run the engine in OEM to start with is I don't want to get lots of lovely detonation to ruin the bores when I inevitably get the fuelling map slightly wrong.
