1995 Mazda MX5 1.6. 90BHP - Frogeye
Hello. Please can anyone help with my son's MX5. He says that the car "judders" and there is little power below 2000rpm. This happens in any gear. Above 2000rpm it is fine. The problem occurs randomly and does not appear to be temperature related. I am afraid that this is a long distance diagnosis as I am been unable to try the car. Sorry this is all the info that I have. Is there a standard fault that could cause this? Hopefully something simple like plugs!! Thanks.

Unlikely to be spark plugs but could be spark plug leads breaking down in the wells where they attach to the plugs.Another common one on this model is a split in the air inlet trunking between the air flow meter and throttle body-sometimes you have to look very carefully to find it!

I'll second the plug leads theory. I didn't believe it until I changed mine and all the hesitaton and stumbling went away.
Beware the Halfords leads - check them for length before driving away from the shop.

Thank you. It's off to get some new leads.

Bought leads from MX5 parts, fitted them last night. Problem solved.

Thank you for the spot on diagnosis.
