I'm really annoyed.
5 years ago I put a cherished number plate onto a car and carefully put away the original plates for future use. Unfortunately, now I've put the cherished plate on retention prior to selling the car, the local licensing office have allocated completely different plates fromt the original and I've had to pay £30 for new plates.
Does this happen a lot?

It happened to me in `98 I traded my car in for another at an independent dealer. My car had an A prefix private plate. The dealer said they`d sort the transfer out and they did that just fine. However the new A number allocated to my old car was different to the original. On asking why i was told it was probably because it was A924 ###. I wouldnt have thought that was so desireable but maybe a porsche fan had it!

When you transfer a cherished mark to any car the original mark is lost and cannot be reissued. DVLA rules i'm afraid so yes it happens all the time. You are not alone!
More to the point, £30 for set of plates? you've been done mate.

Have the rules changed then?. When the MOL gave up driving in 2001 we put her cherished plate on retention and the original J prefix number was allocated back to her Astra. We did ask for it specifically as the index mark was etched in the glass. DVLA suggested they tried to retore the orig. mark if possible ie if it was not already reallocated.
It was however returned as a non transferable mark.

Well this included the cost of some stickies as I couldn't be bothered to drill the plates to fit.
Now, the dealer selling me the new car is not keen to put the cherised plate straight onto the new car. If he does it will save me the cost and hassle of putting the plate on later. So, why is he not keen to do this?

So, why is he not keen to do this?
He won't be able to charge you exorbitant 'registration' fees???

Eh ?! Never had that !

Much better to get the private reg on the car from new, it will be on the manufacturer's service and warranty records under that number which can avoid confusion.

I might be wrong here, but I thought the first registration fee was something charged by the DVLA, it certainly isn't something that we just made up so that we could screw extra money out of people.
As for why they aren't keen, because it's hassle and involves going to DVLA offices etc. Too much like a pain the backside in March, I've worked in 3 garages and none of them have been keen on doing it if they can help it.

This happened to me when I bought a new car last year. The sale was wanted for the dealership's figures and the plate donor car had a short MoT so I drove the car on a normal registration for a couple of weeks. The difference is; I didn't pay for the registration transfer, I let the dealer sort it out.

Maybe he has already registered the car!
