Rover 75 V/99 Auto Gearbox - Tony62
Has anyone experienced a similar problem to this.
I recently noticed that my 75 Club SE Auto 99/V 52000 miles, owned since new, was giving higher than normal revs between gear changes, initially between 1st and 2nd and now between all changes. This only happens once the engine has warmed up and not on every gear change, sometimes not doing it for a complete journey.
My main dealer who has carried out all servicing, claims never to have had this problem before with a 75. They have been dealing with the problem for a week and have kept me informed of their discussions with the Rover factory. I am now advised it is a new gearbox needed with all the associated electonic management system to be replaced.
I am advised the cost of this work is £4500 and the residual value with the work complete is apparently less than that.
Anyone have any views on this or know of a gearbox specialist in the West Sussex/Surrey area.

What you are talking about is 'flaring' - often caused by low line pressure. I am not completely familiar with the autobox on your car, but many Jatco 'boxes have a line-pressure modulator solenoid (duty cycle control) to vary the line pressure during gearchanges. It is possible that this is faulty (or its electronic control). It could, of course, be some other internal valve-body fault.

The box on your car, IIRC, is a JF506E/5F31J Jatco unit that Rover bring in complete from Japan. They don't repair or rebuild these units in the UK and it is unlikely that your dealer knows anything about the internal workings of your gearbox, or its electronics. Indeed, I doubt there is anyone at Rover who knows much about these gearboxes - Rover just supply a spec. to Jatco and Jatco ship the 'boxes over for installation on the production line.
Your 'box is basically the same 5-speed 'box that is used in the Mazda 6, MPV, Ford Galaxy, Jag X-type and various VW/SEAT cars. The transmission ECM communicates with the engine ECU via a CAN bus to modify engine torque during gear changes. Its quite a complicated box of tricks that requires proper diagnostics.

It is highly likely that your gearbox can be fixed for a great deal less than the Rover quote - indeed it is strange that they are quoting for a gearbox AND electronics (unlikely that both are at fault!). My guess would be that the 'box could be fixed without removal from the car (i.e. its a solenoid, wiring or ECM fault)

Your best bet is to contact an experienced auto transmission workshop for some proper diagnostics. Or try talking to a Mazda or Jaguar dealer and see if they can offer any guidance - they may have seen similar faults - esp. the Jag. dealers since they will have handled a lot of these gearboxes.
