Why is it that Peugeot have to insist on having a 'diognostic check' for a handsome price of £55, BEFORE they have started work on your car. I rang up every single one today and they all said the same dispite me saying "I know what the damn problems are with the car, all I need is a new plipper and a new connector under my seat for the airbag!"
So does anyone know a good car electrician in the West Midlands that could help me out please?

Because they have to cover the eventuality that you might have mis-diagnosed the problem which, in this case, is related to stored ECU trouble codes. This is especially so if a dealership does not know the customer, who is ringing up out of the blue.
What would you say if they quoted a price for just what you asked and then in fact there was a further problem discovered? You would, naturally, only want to just pay for what was quoted and be suspicious of any additional charge to fix the car.

But my Peugeot 106 XLD is from 1996 and there isn't a port to plug a laptop in...
|
Because they're rip-off merchants.
I really can't see any reason to take a 1996 106 XLD to a main dealer. The 18 year old mechanic will probably never have worked on one before.
Why not find a independent Peugeot/Citroen specialist, or just an auto-electrician?

£15 to do the work, and £40 towards the cost of the diagnostic equipment ;o)

Slightly puzzled why they are called rip off merchants..1 the gear is expensive.2 someone has to be trained to read the computer readout.3 your own diagnostics may be wrong.as for rip off. I wonder if you would go through the training some tech`s do to be able to recognise what the fault is..Cannot answer for those not trained in Diagnostics.Admitt some have no idea.Price I think about right. Price of having ECU control

the gear is expensive.
It is indeed. A mate of mine who used to work for Saab told me that a Tech2 reader (handheld unit to read fault codes and much more besides) cost in the region of £5000. That was going back several years. Probably more like £6000 or £7000 now.
