My 04 Mondeo 130 TDCi Est came shod with P6000s. Now at 17K miles I am experiencing a rythmic whirring sound starting at around 45-50mph. A recent passenger described it as the sound of a distant helicopter! It's irritating, to say the least. My first thought was that a wheel bearing might be giving trouble, but they were checked today and all declared OK - the noise was attributed to one of the tyres. None of the tyres are warped or bulging (that's a relief) and according to the garage certain makes are prone to this - and it can get worse as the tyre wears.
Having searched the forum I have found posts about this problem (and I see HJ recommended the 6000s) but I would still like to know if swapping the tyres front/rear might improve things. As far as I know the 6000 isn't 'directional' so might reversing the tyre on the wheel provide a solution? I don't really want to ditch the noisy tyre - even if I could identify which of the 4 it is - when there's plenty of life left in them yet, especially the rears of course. (I suppose I could try fitting the spacesaver spare to each corner in turn until the noise stops but that's a job I could do without if there's any alternative? I'd be grateful for any pearls of wisdom!

p6000`s are getting a bit long in the tooth now. Pirelli did improve performance levels with the p6000 powergy. The replacement p6 /p7 already in the market. You may get some benefit by doing a front to back swap and a rebalance as each corner of the car has its own wear and harmonic patterns. Could also be something as simple as gravel stuck in the tread pattern. Most importantly check all pressures cold weekly. Not sure any of this will answer your problem, but may be worth a try. Could be you will have to grin and bear it.

Noise the noise go away above 50mph ??. Let the tyres down to 24 psi and see if the noise reduces. The last time I encountered this type of problem it was a banding fault in a Dunplop tyre with the trye off the car you could see the tread depth was not constant and from memory it had 6 high spots and Dunlop changed the two tyre that ahd been purchased at the same time. Does sound like the tyres.
If you want to hear whirring tyres then drive a Japanese import with well-worn Japanese Domestic market tyres - they make an incredible humming!
Only real solution would be to change the tyres.

BTW - if you want a very good tyre at a low price then try Kumho. The Supra 712 is excellent and far cheaper than Pirelli.

Thanks to all those offering advice, much appreciated. Since the pressures are checked every 2-3 weeks then it shouldn't be that, so it's probably time to swap them around and see if that does the trick. If there is a fault with one tyre I don't somehow think Pirelli will want to know after 17K, but if you don't ask........
For the future, my local Ford garage suggested Michelins are least likely to prove noisy - anyone any better advice?? (Cue the man with the noisy Michelins!)

You probably already found my thread a while back re Goodyears. Everyone, techies included, said wheel bearings. But after a great deal of cost and time it turned out to be mis-shapen tyres. Swapping them around did no good - but then, they were ALL mis-shapen, according to the man @ Micheldever

Dunlop SP01 is the quietest tyre on the market....

BMW and Mercedes forums consistently report a rapid deteriation in the performance of the P6000 tyre after 5-6000 miles. The above suggestions are valid, but you may have to rotate all the tyres with the spare to isolate the problem.

I also noticed this sound in my focus which was originally shod with p6000s. I first noticed the sound, which to me was like a metallic drone, while driving on some of the super smooth road surfaces in France and subsequently on some of the smoother surfaces once back home, at a similar mileage to CG. At the time I had wondered if it could be the tyres. Once the tyres were worn, I replaced them with Vredestein Sportrac 2s which I am thoroughly impressed with, and haven't heard the sound since.
