Hi, going to Edinburgh week on Sat and staying overnight in Hotel. Unfortunately hotel does not have car parking.
Anyone know of a city centre car park that is secure and does a good rate for overnight? Thinking of Princes St / St James Centre / Playhouse area?

There are huge car parks in the St James Centre and alongside the new cinema complex opposite but I can't imagine them being very cheap.
If you don't mind parking on the street, there are no restrictions in Hillside Crescent, which is a five minute walk from the Playhouse. As you go down the hill from the Playhouse, turn right at the roundabout onto London Road and then (I think) first left. Outside this little area most of the streets are subject to pay-and -display machines and residents' parking schemes.
I don't know where you're travelling from, but have you considered flying to Edinburgh? You could then use a secure airport car park and not have the liability of a car in Edinburgh city centre, which is small enough to walk around.
I've driven to Edinburgh a couple of times and the only reason for doing so was wanting to have the use of my car once in Scotland. In my experience, Edinburgh is a very pleasant city to walk around but the congestion and the condition of the roads make it unpleasant to drive in, even if you know your way around.

can only agree parking in edinburgh is a no no
all the roads are taken up holding the limos driving members of the scottish parliament around, worth every penny of our taxes that is
on the plus side GNER are quite good as a train service into edinburgh, as are Scotrail, avoid Virgin at all costs
Easyjet fly in but you takes your chances there, half the time youll end up on a bus anyway (oh sorry theres a problem with the plane and we dont have a spare)
british midland still do it ? i forget, good cos u can get business seats on an internal flight
or BA
or even national express
if you must drive, id drive somewhere with better parking and get the train from there
edinburgh is a fully signed up anti-car nutter controlled city

George Street i.e. parallel to Princes Street is free from 1830 hrs to 0630 hrs and is quite easy to get a space before about eight. Also around the square at the end of George Street is meter parking but free at night. Which end of town are you staying as you could park in Castle Terrace Car park just off Lothian Road (West End of town). If you need more help come back. Regards Peter

You were also asking about eating out in Edinburgh. Look at www.thelocalweb.net/loc/83/loc83_288.htm . If it is dry I would walk up from the Playhouse, across the Bridges and and up the Royal Mile with lots of resturants Jacksons " A Taste of Scotland" being rated well but there must be 30 on the mile leading up to The Witchery, a little expensive but superb, www.thewitchery.com/where.html depends when you show finishes really Conact me if you need more assistance. Regards Peter

If you are in the 1930 performance then I guess you will get out until 2210 hrs or so a late booking would be required. If you are looking for an Indian Restaurant I would suggest the Raj Leith goto www.thingstodo-edinburgh.com/brochure/content. jsp?FIELD=Eating_Out&GROUP=6&LEVEL=1&ITEM=7 - 27k
Take a look but time is not on your side. There are restaurant’s close to the theatre must be a dozen within 200 yds, Italian, Chinese, Indian all sorts. Regards Peter

Peter , just in from work, thanks for all your suggestions. I am now booked at a little Italian called Ferri's which came recommended. Any experience of it?
I am travelling from Lanarkshire and staying at old Waverley on Princes St, , thus just wanting to drive through and park the car. Had looked at getting train from Livingston (where my sister is) but for the 6 of us it was going to be about £36 for fares so reckoned we should be able to get parking for 2 cars for that amount.
I have been advised that the NCP under the Omni centre is 24 hour secure but not sure of charge. Any ideas? Re St James Centre, the last time I was int he car aprk, admittedly about 5 years ago, I was reluctant to sit alone in the car never mind leaving it unattended overnight? Has it changed?
Once again, thanks for your input so far.

I too am in livingston but work in Edinburgh. I have never had to park over night in town but as I say George Street is metered parking and is free after 1830 hrs and there is not a car crime problem there. Many of my business visitors park there but you will have to move you car smartish in the morning. There are several pay car parks at the back of the Waverly station one outdoors and two or three indoors/secure ask the hotel if they have a deal with any off them. And no I am not familiar with the restuarant but enjoy, the show is fantastic and even has a story. Regards Peter

BobbyG, a quick look on NCP's website, www.ncp.co.uk/findcp_results.asp?place=EH13AA&db=p...0
shows Greenside offering overnight parking from 17:00 - 09:00 for £3.30 and St James for £2.50. Only been to Edinburgh once so can't vouch for either safety wise but from what you've said earlier about St James the discount is probably to go towards some new hub caps!!!
Whatever you decide enjoy the show, I shall be entertaining for SWMBO's birthday bash that evening so hopefully we will both be getting a decent meal!

Hi Bobby
I am also looking for a car park to park my car in Edinburgh overnight - on Sat 7th March.
I will probably arrive in Edinburgh around 12noon on the Sat and depart again on the Sunday around noon.
How did you get on finding one? Would be grateful for any info. thanks
Regards

Bobby, if you are looking for somewhere for a group to eat near the relatives, then look at the Wagamama.com site. There is a restaurant in Livingston, if you sign up on the website it is 2 main meals for price of one at the moment. Well worth a visit - you can even check out the menu on line.

Marie, I ended up using the multi storey just up from the Playhouse on the same side of the road. Was relatively cheap but as this was 4 years ago I can't remember the cost!
|
That is the Greenside underground car park. You should be able to get costs online, I think it is an NCP carpark.
|
There are also lots of Park n Ride car parks arround the city - 2 on the west side, 2 on south side, 1 on east side. Free parking and regular bus services. the airport one is exceptionally good, since there is a night bus service (N22). During the day, it's served by the 35 and 48 / X48 service. Bus fare is currently £1.30 (I think - just gone up last week) into town. Parks are monitored by CCTV.
Taking cars into Edinburgh just now is NOT to be recommended - tram works everywhere and diversions fool even the locals - and even bus drivers!
