I had the misfortune over Christmas to drive along what used to be called the A140 which is the main road between Ipswich and Norwich and was apalled at the attempts to turn it back into a cart track.Speed limits of down to 30 mph and 50mph limits on a dual carrigeway.who is responsible for setting these ridculous limits, I know the road passes close to houses but the road was there first!!

yes you don't notice the ever sillier anti car measures on the roads you regularly use, they just creep up on you a little at a time, a lower limit here, a speed bump there, new camera on clear straight safe stretch, you get so accustomed to it you forget how startlingly silly it is
then you come across an old journey you have not been on for a while and you see 70 limits dropped to 40 or 30, dual carriageways turned into single track (oh yes that bus lane gets used twice a day on weekdays), road thinning measures (how exactly these are supposed to make things safer I have no idea) etc etc
not much you can do but campaign, maybe join the association of British drivers, write to your MP, write to the newspapers
don't hold out much hope with so many anti-car nutters in positions of power

Don't know the road in question but, as to the 'which was there first' question, by that logic all those people who've had roads built next to them after their houses were constructed should enjoy the right to determine the speed limits. As a general rule and having seen at first hand the considerable damage caused by high speed accidents in residential areas, I believe speed limits in such areas should be lower than those elsewhere.
