Despite all the detailed posts I am still confused.
Can I top up my 2002 VW Passat (petrol) with ANY reputable 10w/40 oil?
The VW manual suggests: -
Multi Grade High Lubricity oils VW500 00 or 502 00
High Lubricity oils VW 501 01
I have always used Castrol GTX and more recently Castrol Magnatec (misleadingly marketed as 'synthetic engineering'). I know that the latter is OK because it makes reference to one of the VW numbers above on the back of the container.
Do it matter if the oil is mineral, semi synthetic or synthetic though?

So long as the oil meets VW requirements it should be OK just for topping up purposes.
It's probably better though to stick to the same type of oil i.e. semi or fully synthetic.
