I have a problem with starting my '93 reg Fiesta in that the engine will turn over but will not actually start. Started fine one morning, problem occured the next. Could this be the starting motor?

Hello.
How fast does it turn over.
Try starting with the clutch down as this sometimes helps.

Hi Martin
Engine turns over normally - it just doesn't appear to "fire". Every now and again it sounds like its going to start but doesn't.
Tried with the clutch down but no joy.
Thanks

Hello MattG
When was it last serviced.
Are the leads good and the plugs clean.
Take one out if its wet with fuel then it is now flooded.
If you are getting fuel its is one of two things.
1. Ignition
2. compression
How many miles has the car covered.

Hi martin
I had a full service done on it in the 1st week of December and it's now done around 68K miles.
I'll check the plugs & leads later today.
Many thanks

Hello.
When replacing the plugs be very carefull that you do not cross thread the plug holes. iam assuming this is a 1.1 or 1.3 put some copper grease on the plug threads (small amount)
Also one more point.
Did the car operate correctly before it was serviced.

Yes, it's a 1.1 litre engine. It was working fine before the service - it hadn't been done for a long time so thought it could do with it.

There was a thread a while back about removing the ECU relay and seeing if it fired then, but I think this was a hot starting problem and I can't seem to find the thread now.
The cheapest solution would be to look at this thread www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=22519 . Being as it's only started happening in the cold weather this may be your culprit. As I mentioned, if the tubes kinked consider replacing it. The best way to clean out the tube and the filler cap is with white spirit, you'll be surprised by how much gunk comes out.
It might not be your problem, but it worked for fiestaman.

Sorry I'm jumping ahead of myself and making assumptions it's either a 1.1 or 1.3 as Martin said. If not then the above will not apply.

Well, I was wrong, it IS a cold start thread I was remembering. See here www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=17771 . Also look at the other thread DD gave a link to.

Hello.
If it ran before it was serviced.
I suspect that the plugs have been incorrectly gapped.
Take it back is all i suggest.

The plugs should have been gapped to 1.0mm. Though I've been driving with mine gapped at 0.8mm for a year and haven't noticed any difference.
There should be a plate at the front of the engine bay showing the correct plug gap.

Thank you all for your tips - I will try them all and come back with the outcome.

Hello
It has just hit me that there are two reasons why the car will not start.
1. being the plug gaps etc.
2. being the flywheel sensor (Gets covered in clutch dust)
The Flywheel sensor is just below the starter motor and could do with cleaning this was required on the wifes mk3

I have finally resolved the problem, albeit with a little luck!! It appears to have been a fuel blockage of some sort as after many attempts to start it, it finally did. Each time I turned the ignition the engine got that bit closer to starting. When it finally did start its been fine ever since.
Thanks for the help anyway.

Hi Matt
Thanks for coming back with your outcome. I guess my first question should have been "is fuel getting to the plugs" and "are they sparking"!
