Rover 25 td - Den
I am the new owner of an X plate 23k mile Rover 25 TD. Previous cars have been Peugeot 306 non-turbo diesel's.
Is it me or are 25 TD's slow on acceleration?
On pressing the accelerator, not a lot happens until the revs eventually pick up.
Very slow on take-away for 2-3 seconds then quicker.
Flat spot? Turbo lag?
First turbo so maybe not used to having to build the revs up to accelerate!

Also brakes feel as if nothing is happening as pedal is depressed then car does slow down.
Not much "feel" to them.
I would appreciate any comment on the above.
Merry xmas and a Happy New Year to all.

There will be some lag until the turbo kicks in, then you should be away over the clouds. The L-series TD is a fast unit but it's difficult to say whether it's performing ok without driving it.
There is one thing I would check first before doing anything else and that is look at the boost pressure sensor. On the Rover 600 (used the same engine) the sensor was located on the bulkhead upside down, where moisture could collect. This sometimes meant the connection turned green with copper residue. Remove each connector and thoroughly clean them.
The L series does have a more sudden power delivery compared to some of the latest diesels - it first saw service in mid 1995, so it's a bit dated now. However they are good tough units.

Thanks very much for the info Big Cat.
Much appreciated.
Will check it out.

Big Cat,
Checked boost pressure sensor(or what looks like one)!
It was clean.
Engine can rev to about 3.8k in 2nd gear and does 33mph!
I gave it the "boot" to find out what it would/would not do.
Are these engines governed, 'cause at these revs the car should have taken off! Literally.
Puzzled!

Have you checked the air filter, sounds like its not getting enough air (although you'd also then see smoke in the mirror). These engines should rev cleanly to the redline, and give about 45mph in 2nd gear.

I'd get it checked, there maybe a simple problem.

Neil T,
Thanks for the reply.
No way will it do 45mph in 2nd.
Acceleration is particulary poor in 1st and 2nd when a hill is involved.
The garage that I bought it from a week ago, are, as I write, checking it out, so hopefully all will be rectified.
Then again!!!!!!!!
Merry Xmas.

Garage agree that the car is sluggish but cannot fix, so having to return car to a Rover specialist to determine whether it's normal or abnormal.
This should be interesting!!!!!!

25TD is quite spritely given the agricultural sounding engine - should pull strongly from low revs.

I'd put my money on a faulty MAF sensor (again)

Car is now a "pocket rocket"
