my car is fitted with an auxiliary heater which is supposed to come on when the engine temp is below 70 deg and the outside temp less than 6 deg. Now that we have had some cold mornings I am of the opinion that mine doesnt work as the cabin does not seem to be getting warm particularly quickly, I would have expected warm air to be wafting out within a minute or so but it takes about 4-5 mins/ 2-3 miles.

Our V220CDi had one (so does Our caravelle TDi)This one had a switch for the aucillary heater. You could tell when it was on because of the smell, very much like a parafin heater.
I very rarely used it as it didn't seem to warm the heater any faster.
As far as I can remember the unit is a Webasto.

My E320CDI has a switch in the ashtray compartment (if memory serves!) Is yours switched off?

Yes, checked that. This system (like the climate control) is 'on' by default and has to be selected 'off'.

Mine works only when the auto climate control is activated, and starts warming within a minute after driving off.
