Top Gear v. Fifth Gear Collective Thread - Oz
My judgement based on the programmes of the last two evenings, Sunday and Monday, respectively:
Top Gear: 1 hour of largely subjective and frivolous comment. No point in re-playing the video.
Fifth Gear: ½ hour of concentrated, objective and well considered marketing information. Must look at again. No contest.

Score: Top Gear-Fifth Gear 0-1.

Pretty much as the title suggests. I've just managed to haul myself into the living room and watch (a re-run) of 5th Gear on Discovery Home and Leisure. What a fantastic program. I occasionally catch bits of it but this was the full episode.

It was the one about bulletproof cars and at the end, Tiff Needell and Adrian someone or other (quite a good reporter actually) were telling you how to attack cars which may have it in for you!

I caught one the other week about Killer Luggage and I have to say, I think it's actually better than Top Gear. The reporting is funny, accurate and every last one of them knows what they're on about.

Did Needell, Henderson, and Wilson leave Top Gear or did TG ditch them?

Don't get me wrong - Top Gear is good. Hammond knows what he's on about, Clarkson is...well...I suppose at time, funny - even though I disagree completely with what he says most of the time but James May - well - I'll leave that to you.

More and more cars have 6-speed gearboxes these days. Makes 'Fifth Gear' lose its meaning a bit like Transport 2000!

Top gear is entertainment with cars. 5th gear is entertainment about cars. I religiously watch both and i disagree with just about everything clarkson et al say but it is much better viewing. I did used to like Quentin and vicky is a nice piece of eye candy but i would never tape 5th gear.(its on c5 too). Topgear10 5th gear 1

Top gear better than 5th gear, 5th gear better than top gear.. oh please!!

Read countless posts on this subject.. if you like top gear fine if you like 5th gear fine too, but it's getting boring and tedious now. so there!

Steady on Imagos! It was the first time in a while I'd seen 5th Gear - you can count on one hand the number of episodes I've watched and I was simply making an observation.

I'll always watch Top Gear - chances are I won't see 5th Gear for another good couple of weeks.

I like both...SO THERE!

Agree - there are lots of new people here and therefore threads which are bound to be oft-repeated. Nobody has to read them.

For my part Top-Gear is becoming more like Parkinson with cars every week and since there are so few motoring shows around (ironic since the western world relies on motor vehicles) I'd prefer to have more stuff about the cars/motoring and rather less of the silly games and metaphor ridden verbosity from Hammond, JC and that other guy who needs a hair-cut.

5th Gear gets my vote for now.

I'm just gutted as think VBHs bit with the Defender on the beach was filmed a couple of miles from home- and didnt have a clue (no change there then.....)

Come on oyu guys. By far the best (alomst motoring) related show has to be watching Quentin Wilson on strictly come dancing.

Its such a pity he was eliminted in round one, i could have watched his discomfort for hours.

Hi motoring fans!!

IMHO, the sky digi tv progs - Wheeler Dealers, and Sold in 60 seconds are very good. We skip the adverts which are long by recording or starting to watch the progs late via sky Dgi Plus box.

Another prog is Auot Mondial

Top Gear is going down the Drain and so is 5th Gear but not as much as TG. However, we still watch TG for a laugh as LC pokes fun at the little guy.

I've Emailed about this, and it appears they've taken note. I emailed them during the last lot of progs.

I agree, wheeler dealers is very entertaining, with edd china and mike brewer, also, another brewer programme, deals on wheels is enjoyable. As for top gear vs 5th gear, its gotta be TG all day long! 5th gear have got VBH (penny mallory was NO competition), but they also got that annoying tom ford.

Absolutely - that Porsche and the Capri they did up - FANTASTIC!

Hi

Yep we agree that Deals on wheels is a fantastic programme. It just sliped our mind as i was in a rush at lunch time.

Sold in 60 secs is brill - gives good insight into affordable motoring and what's, what at auctions.

Wheeler Dealers.

Deals on wheels.

We've seen the Capri being done up - the saab, Merc, Golf, Mini, Porsche - there may be another - are there any we've missed??

We agree with most that 5th grear is better than TG.

Re the poster mention 6th gear - we agree, why do we need so many gears - we know techinically why, but really do we need them??

Auto is best and in that the more gears the better

Think you've covered the lot from that last series.

The new series started last week (Tues 9pm on Discovery, Home & Leisure) where Ed did up a Mk1 Toyota MR2.

This week it's the turn of an old Pug 205.

Why do cars need 6 speed gearboxs? With the increased torque of modern cars, especially diesels, 5 gears are plenty.

Yes there's something i agree with you all, Mike Brewer et al with Deals on Wheels, wheeler dealers etc is great entertainment. Do try to catch it on Discovery home and leisure if you can.

Incidently Ed China who appears on Wheeler Dealers seems to be a very clever bloke. Check out some of his contraptions here www.cummfybanana.com/index.php Street legal motorised armchairs no less!!

This may well wind some of you up something rotten, but the one the manufacturers prefer is Top Gear.

The received wisdom is that Fifth Gear is watched mostly by petrolheads, large proportion are low to middle income, few people in the market for £20k plus cars watch it.

Top Gear has a slightly lower petrolhead count, tends to be less 'anoraky' in presentational terms, and Clarkson - love him or hate him - is a hugely influential frontman. Yes, some cars do get a caning, but those that come out unscathed have had better exposure than Fifth Gear.

Put simply, most people who buy expensive cars make their own mind up and don't spend their spare time stuck in car mags looking for help. High proportion of Fifth Gear viewers do.

Don't jump on me, guys; I'm only the messenger...

>>More and more cars have 6-speed gearboxes these days. >>Makes 'Fifth Gear' lose its meaning a bit like Transport 2000!

I remember seeing Tiff have a go at Top Gear using exactly this idea. He was test-driving a 6-speed 911 or something, and he said something along the lines of "I find that top gear is a bit long, but when you change to 5th gear, that's when the fun really starts"

Personally, I think Top Gear is great. It's a different show to 5th Gear, and to compare them is like comparing Crimewatch to The Bill, because they've both got the police in them.
