astra heater - johnboy1967
my 1997 turbo diesel has developed 2 heater problems, first is speeds 1 and 2 do not work on fan i beleive i need to replace the resistor for fan.secondly when the engine heats up and i use the fan it seems to be damp air coming from the heater as the windows start steaming up.any suggestions please.

*****Johnboy, incase you're looling for your other thread on the Laguna, I've put it into the Discussion section of this forum.*****

Heater matrix leaking will cause it.

Yep. The resistor pack needs replacing.

The steam may be just rainwater leaking in from the scuttle if its all full of leaves or the splash tray is missing between engine bulkhead and windscreen. The smell will give it away if its antifreeze and the screen will be oily.

Just a thought. Is the air recirculation button switched on, you know, the button that switches from outside (dry) air to recirculated (moist) air? That will mist up the windows a treat especially if the weather is wet (wet shoes, clothes etc in the car).

Another possibility, if it is a MKIII Astra, is the seal between the plastic panel containing the wiper spindles and the lower part of the windscreen - what you might call a scuttle panel. This can lift off from the windscreen.

To test it, open the bonnet, and take out the removable panel over the pollen filter, and slowly, pour a little water over the screen. If any ends up going onto the pollen filter, this is the cause.

The removable panel over the pollen filter is also frequently not replaced properly, such that the pollen filter gets a soaking.

I suppose, a wet pollen filter is the common factor in the two faults I have described.

I had the same problem, it was the heater matrix leaking. Hell of a job to get it out.

i have checked the radiator level and this has stayed the same ever since this problem started.no noticable smell either.hussarman did you remove the matrix yourself or at a garage and if so how much for matrix and/or fitting.

If you aren't losing cooling water, and there is no smell of anti - freeze, it may be worth your while looking at *other* possibilities.

Replacing a heater matrix is not an quick / easy job, nor is it cheap if you pay someone else to do it. I would not consider the job until I was sure that it was the fault.

Troubleshooting the other possibilities for water ingress is, however, both cheap and easy. There is no need to guess.

As someone else has mentioned, check the pollen filter housing is sealed properly.

Details here:- www.puravent.co.uk/products%20frameset.htm to help you locate and check the cover is on properly.

Also, have you got air-con, and does the problem go away when you use it?
