Hi all,
I'm a member of 2 other forums and because a) I am off today, b) I am bored and c) I am sad, I noticed that both of the others have a star system.
Considering I post very rarely on the other 2, I don't have any stars but I was wondering what do they mean. For example, someone who's posted 25 bijillion posts may have 10 gold stars but what is the advantage of that?
Just to link to this forum considering this is a separate thread, how come this one doesn't have that system. (Not a complaint just a geniune query)
Many thanks

I am a member of a private (paid) website discussing shares. It has a ratings system. So for people who own a share, a post praising it gets lots of good ratings. And ones against get nil.
Net effect: valueless. Just reflects views (prejudices?) of readers.

This is a good point - How do you know if someone posting is decent and useful or just an annoying troll unless you visit often?
Oh here, it's worth clicking the profile (if available) to see number of posts. The other place you'll find me had a rating system. They've abandoned it.
The idea is you post something good and people who like it add to your reputation. More reuptation == more stars (points) and so anyone new to the forum can see if you're generally helpful or not. People can also not like your posting and click "disapprove" diminishing your reputation.
Of course, within two weeks, we'd realised that we could all "rep" our mates who would rep back and the stars system would show huge reputation for some users, not really refelecting status.
Because it was abused, it was removed.

RF - never knew you cared!
Good point Lee - the forum profiles probably do the job just as well. Speaking of which, I'm not that far off 900 posts. Who wants to bet I'll get up to 1000 by November 6th? (A year since I joined this wonderful forum)
I can't believe I got through 18 years of life without the (half) witty comments of RF, the technical knowledge of Aprilia, the person who we all poke fun at (Ricky a.k.a. Alan), the gaffers (Alan, Mark and Dave), No Wheels - oh how my arg...debating skills have been honed since joining and of course everyone else who are too numerous to mention but all equally important - honest!
Thanks for answering my query - you all deserve a star.
