Sorry if this issue has been raised before, but does anybody know how many weeks early one can get an MOT prior to the actual expiry date.?? - Just wanted to combine a routine service which is now due with an MOT, which actually does not fall due until 31st December.

One month before the old one runs out, according to the back of my certificate.

You can have it MOT's any time, but the new certificate will only be exetended to a year from the expiry of the old one if the test is within the month prior to the old cert's expiry. If you get the car serviced anually, then why not get it tested as well, then the test and service will come round together next year?

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Just a small point - if you have a vehicle's MOT done during the month before the current one runs out, you must show it to the MOT examiner before the new one is issued.

Yep Stuart's right- take the old cert with you and you effectively get one years MoT from the date of expiry of the old cert, so a maximum of 13 moths MOT.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Many thanks fellow BR`s for your informative replies, which are much appreciated.
As this is the first MOT, I guess I will need to take along the purchase invoice to cofirm details.

Don't know if that works.
It may well be that you simply have the first MoT for 12 months only, from its third birthday.

No, if it's the cars first MOT you can get it done up to one month before it's due, i.e. one month before the car is 3 years old.
You have to take along the V5 and the tester will look at it and put the serial number of the V5 on the MOT certificate where is says "Serial number of Previous MOT"
Doing this way you don't have to have the MOT done when the car is exactly 3 years old, and you don't have to loose days by having it done before it's due, providing you produce the V5 as described.

Because you need a valid MOT to renew road tax on the car's 3rd birthday (example 1/September), most people will get the MOT a few days earlier (example 25/August).
A problem then occurs in future years if the car needs extensive-time-consuming repairs to pass its MOT, or needs a not-readily-available spare part. No MOT = no road tax = automatic penalty for not renewing tax.
One answer is (for one year only) to delay having the MOT done (example 2/September) and then applying for the road tax at a post office one day late. In subsequent years the old MOT will be valid on the 1st September and this problem won't occur.
This problem happened to my daughter this year - three weeks to repair her car for its MOT, with some real worries about getting the road tax sorted out.

Tip - make sure you give the tester the old MOT certificate first. If he goes off and writes out a new one without seeing it, it is too late to produce it when you collect the car or emerge from the "viewing area".
