Help! Buying cars on the internet - David767
I posted an earlier question re: autocarsource.com but no replies. So sorry to be boring.... but looking to buy a new car and the internet prices of course seem to be cheaper than going into a franchised dealer, and I have two more questions:
1) If a car has had two owners (i.e. the first resgistered to a UK dealer and then me) does this affect the re-sale value say in 3 years. Is this classed as UK car?
2) Has anyone bought on-line? If so, how did it go?

Actually that might have been 4 questions, sorry. Any advice welcome.

Thanks.

Hi David,

I work in the brokerage department of a toyota dealer - all i deal with are customers who have come through an internet broker so i have a good knowledge of the subject.

The way it works is that the broker will agree to refer a certain number of clients to the dealer; in turn the broker gets fleet discount, they usually take a small amount of this but pass the rest onto the customer who gets the car cheaper than they would walking into a showroom.

1) Yes it would affect the value - a car with one owner is always going to be worth more than a two owner car. What you are refering to is a pre-registered vehicle, yes it is a UK car. Normally you will only get an import from somewhere like a car supermarket.

2)It can seem a bit daunting dealing through the internet but most of the transaction is done by phone and post, only the initial introduction is done on the net. Once the broker has refered your details to the dealer you will normally just speak to the dealer.

I\'ve got no experience of dealing with www.autocarsource.com but generally as long by dealing with the dealer direct even if the broker goes belly up your OK as you paid the deposit to a dealer.

other firms you may want to try include
www.broker4cars.co.uk
www.carfile.net
www.drivethedeal.com
www.ukcarbroker.com
www.new-car-discount.com

Hope this is of use and if you\'ve got any more queries drop me a line.

Kev

There have been plenty of threads on this in the past so a forum search would be a good idea. That said, blue_haddock, has dealt with the subject pretty comprehensively.

I bought my car through ukcarbroker last year and found the experience extremely easy. The broker really has little involvement other than to pass your order onto a dealer. Brokers are a wonderful thing for those of us with underdeveloped haggling skills.

I have to admit that I felt mildly reckless when I hovered over the submit button on the order page. It is, after all, a far bigger deal than buying books or CDs over the net.

As long as you make sure you're paying no money to the broker you'll be fine. As a further safeguard, pay your deposit by credit card.

All I would add to that is that internet deals may not always give you specific dealer discounts. For example I have just bought a brand new car - chosen because I can get free insurance for a year (worth about £800+ to me because the car is for our au pair)and the manufacturer's finance people were offering a further £1k off, which I can cancel in about three months' time and replace with a 5.8% finance deal.
I called four dealers and in the course of an afternoon and about 10 quick calls got the price down to below the What Car target price.
I checked this price with an internet broker who is often praised on this site, who said they couldn't match that deal.

2nd that. Indeed I suspect Blue Haddock and I may have done business (albeit via the broker).

The key point is your personality. Some folks take great satisfaction in getting the best deal they poissibly can. Others don't want to spend the time/aren't good at haggling/will accept a deal that's OK rather than the best achievable.

Good luck.
