Is it an auto or not? - runboy
For the purposes of an automatic driving licence, when is an automatic a proper automatic?

I understand that the clutchless manuals are not deemed a true automatic, but what about an auto box which allows you to 'nudge' up and down the gears?

SWMBO is learning to drive and it could be that a geared car is just too much to learn and an auto would be better.

Regardless of the laws concering it, I would certainly recommend, if she's going to learn to drive, learning in a manual.
If you look at some of the muppets who are on the road, in manuals, I'm pretty sure she can get the hang of it.
I assume the problem is that she's daunted by the prospect, having not driven before? If you get a good, sympathetic driving instructor, she'll be over that fear within the first two lessons.
Learning in an automatic severely limits the cars she's then legal to drive, and doesn't teach some of what should be the basics of driving correctly and safely.

Many thanks, seems to answer it. I may fancy an auto myself as I do a lot of town driving and fancy an easy life now!!!
