Today on the M25 appraoching jcn 2 I saw a classic example of how so many drivers exacerbate the errors of others. As we were turning off for the A2/M2 and I found myself next to a LHD Golf with tw occupants. The woman driver was clearly (and understandably) nervous and her male partner appeared to be giving her directions as to which exit to take. Still confused, her speed slowed and she drifted across lanes before making a last second decision to take the exit I was already on, narrowly avoiding the metal barrier. Whilst it wasn't exactly a text book manoeuvre, what really struck me was the behaviour of a number of drivers behind her who were literally driving inches from her rear bumper trying to get her out of the way the whole time this was going on. Not only were they in danger of being caught up in any accident she caused, they were plainly guilty of making matters worse and giving her virtually no room for error. I really don't understand this sort of behaviour and wonder how many accidents are caused in this manner. Why can't people just ease off a little ? It appears to be almost like a tragic game to some idiots but I'm sure many of them don't even realise they're doing anything wrong.

Although it shouldn't make any difference, I should add that the car had a foreign plate and if not certain, it was highly likely that the occupants were foreign and not used to driving on our roads.

Volvoman, another example of people not being patient and just being blinkered about themselves.

Agree with what you say Volvoman.
Who of us hasn't at some time been in a strange area and found yourself in the wrong lane, we all make mistakes and know it, but why do some people treat you as if you are just out of Broadmoor.

If these people were just selfish I'd understand it (you know, the type who'd push a child out of the way to get to the front of a queue). However, waht really amazes me is that they son't see the danger they're putting themselves in. I can't think of any other aspect of our lives where some people would knowingly be drawn to a dangerous situation, get caught up in it and then decide to make it worse. It doesn't require any special skill or training to just ease off a little does it.

I went up to cannock chase yesterday.(took my Daughter to the mld national championships)I was surprised at how drivers up beyond Birmingham.seemed to be very tolerant of mistakes made. as I did on several occasions.both on peak traffic movement and off.Something you don`t find in or around my area (orpington)I found it different when I came back as traffic got closer together and did not allow anyone to get in to an inside lane.I can understand why accidents occur as no one will.Give way and get annoyed you are trying. As you said I think they are of the opinion they are in the right.six foot away from car in front.wonder if they think themselves invincible? or an accident wont happen to them.

I have a simple system.

I require twice the standard following distance between the car in front of me and the car behind.

If chummy behind wishes to reduce his safety margin, it is my responsibility to adjust the combined gap back to "standard".

I have resisted posting here for months now, but your habit of arriving just in time to 'put us all right' complete with emboldening has tempted me out of retirement!

Mr Potter - how can one man be so SMUG???

Interesting view - that somehow me saying what I do is perceived as "putting others right".

Sorry, have I joined in the general berating of others?

ONW - I expect the idiots involved in the incident I witnessed on Sunday would accuse me of the same thing but that wouldn't stop me from doing it.
