306, 1995 DT, 150K

I have recently replaced the front struts, springs, wishbones on the front of my dear old 306.

Since the work the car drives perfect, holds the coners, no bouncing, I could not be happier, however, every so oftern there is a funny vibration type noise.

It sound like a window chattering (but it is not) It definately comes froms the suspension area, on a certain road @ 55mph it sings away, It happens more oftern when the driving with passengers.

Any ideas, the springs appear to be in the little slots and not be spun by hand, I have noticed that when on full lock there is a slight clunk noise which I guess is a spring moving but I can not work out how, or what to do about.

Could it just be the old girl is old, and the new suspension is still hard?

Help, it is a very annoying issue.

cheers

I know how annoying it is, mine does it aswell. The exact same symptoms and it was after I replaced the front shock absorbers too. I was thinking along the lines of replacing the wishbones, but you have done this and it makes no difference, so perhaps I will scrub that idea!
Sorry I can't be of any help, but will look forward to any responses to this problem.
Mine has had new droplinks recently and also botoom balljoints, so I think they are ruled out.

Pienmash,

I full torqued everyting when I did the job, you say the clunk you have is the power steering pump, what, is she loose?

I will be very insterested to hear if checking your torques solves the issue.

Can anyone else help????

Macpherson bearings. I had the exact same thing and that was the problem. Tenner a side to replace, problem solved.

Mcpherson bearing,

What is this, please can you explain where it is, and where did you get them from.

I really hope I can solve this issue, it is driving me up the wall.

The top mount for the strut(part inbetween strut and top of wing) is 2 pieces. In between these 2 pieces is the bearing in question. They are prone to failure as just held together by a daft plastic clip and the casing rusts very easy. It looks as though it is fixed to the bottom section of the mount but it just taps free. I got them from a local motor factors that specialiseds in french and italian cars however GSF will do them as will most local motor factors.

Hmm, I'm not too sure about the top mount bearings being the cause on mine, I replaced them with new ones when I replaced the front shock absorbers. It sounds as if its coming from lower down when I do hear it, Im going to try the wishbone bushes soon hopefully, will let you know how it goes.

For the sake of a couple of quide I will change the top bearings.

However, as I previously said, when I did the strut I replaced the wisebones as well. It seems to me that the spring it self it chattering.

It feels solid and is located correctly. The chattering is worse when I have passengers. The other day I took the outlaws to the airport, it chattered all that way there. When I came back alone it was fine except for the odd rattle.

It needs sorting, please keep me updated on your progress

when you replaced the struts etc have you lined the struts up properly?? A lot of people tend to do it so the drop link mounting plate is straight rather than the little locating lug at the front being level. Just a thought??

which way should you do it? align drop link or locating lug?
306 front suspension noise - r1ch1e
Bottom of the strut there is a little lump, this should be directly out facing you as you look into the arch. This will make the drop link mount slightly angled toward the drop link.

This is a possibility but unlikely, on the rear of the strut there is another 'lump' which slots into a slot in the hub carrier. If this was not aligned, the strut would sit too high and the droplink wouldn't fit anyway....

my 306 front suspension is noisy too, only in damp weather! not sure what will be affected by the weather in the front suspension.....

If its noisy when damp its more than likely the dust seals are just getting condensation or something in them and just making that noise against the actual strut seal (like a damp window being rubbed) Might be worth just whipping the wheel off, lift the dust cover and make sure the actual strut seal hasnt gone and theres no actual fluid on the strut.
