Mk4 Fiesta (98) - Damp driver footwell - Moby
Hi guys

I decided to clean my car today for the first time in ages - it must have been at least two months. I lifted up the driving mats and noticed a damp patch in the driver footwell. I then lifted up the carpet and noticed quite a bit of dampness, the foamy protection stuff was quite sodden.

Any ideas? is this a common Fiesta problem? I seem to remember reading something about this some time ago... all the plugs in the floor appear to be ok... where is this coming from??!

TIA
Moby.

Hi - a very common problem I'm afraid - though it's usually the passenger footwell that gets soaked. I owned a '98 model which was fine for 3 years then started to leak. Apparently it's caused by faulty seams in the bulkhead, so the water ingresses from somewhere behind the dash rather than the floor. Don't know of a 'fix'. Anyone else out there know of one?

Yes there is a fix, but it involves stripping out the front seats, carpets, complete dashboard etc, just so you can re-seal all of the joints around the bulkhead. I know because I've done it and would never attempt to do it again. It really is too much hassle for too little gain. The best thing I can suggest is that you dry your carpets out as best you can and keep an eye on the situation. The good thing is that the summer is approaching so is should become less of a problem.

The fault also comes through water leaking through the hole where electrical cables pass into the car: the rubber washer is not a good fit/ perishes.

Known solution: one tube of clear silicon sealant. Apply to cable/all entry holes in bulkhead/all visble seams under bonnet.

That all makes sense. Cheers for all your replies guys, really appreciate it.

I will take up the carpet this coming weekend and dry everything out (hopefully the weather will hold) and then buy some sealant. Heres hoping it will at least ease the problem.

Cheers

First thing I'd be tempted to check is that the pollen filter cover is firmly closed and watertight.

Ahhh I will have a look at that in the morning... cheers DD.

If you have got a sun roof that can be wound to tilt or to slide back. Check the drain holes and pipes because they tend to block, then the water goes into the car leaking from the sun roof which ever side is blocked.
