Hi,
When starting my '53 yaris 1.3 for the first time in the morning, the engine seems to rev too high for the first few seconds, giving a rough sound. After that it starts ok, is this normal?. Thanks for any advice.

Hi,
The same happens with my 1.0 Yaris especially in winter. The rough sound is oil starvation to the top end. I found that changing the oil to the a 5w-40 as reccomended in the hand book (dealer used 10w-40) helped. Also change the oil at least twice a year and give the engine plenty of Italian tune ups.

Are you sure you have a filter with a non-return valve, this would restrict the oil flowing back down again while the engine isn't turning.
Or so I understand!

As the car is only three months old, I presume it has the correct oil and filter fitted. Should I change them anyway to be sure. If I do, how will this affect the running-in process?.

IRC a recent thread (Re Focus?) stated that modern engines when first started do rev higher for the first few seconds due to low emissions requirements.
Certainly this occurs with sons petrol Focus and I seem to recall the same on daughters 1.3 2000 Yaris.

Henry,
Does the Focus or the Yaris sound as if they are starved of oil in those first few seconds?.

Unless things have changed you will get this on first startup.
being engine is cold it will overfuel untill engine has warmed up.depending on engine could be a few seconds to several minutes.oil flow would also depend on engine oil pump I would assume it has hydraulic tappets.if so it can take several seconds for the oil to reach the tappets giving the effects you mention

Spoke to Toyota today and they confirmed that the engine does rev quite high for the first few seconds on cold start up, this reduces the chance of any unburnt fuel being emitted from the exhaust and assists the catalytic converter to reach optimum temperature, but cannot diagnose the noise without further investigation.

I cannot get access to the Yaris, 60K on the clock, for 5 weeks. I have no idea what oil is it without asking the non Toyota dealer I bought it from. (They did an oil change as part of the PDI.) I will try to update you when I get my hands on the keys.
I will try to start up the Focus in the next day or two.

P.S. see my update in "Toyota Warranty - reasonable."

Henry,
On starting my sons Citroen Saxo ( 52 reg, ) from cold, it goes to about 1300 revs and sounds good, no indication of roughness or oil starvation.I feel that the Yaris is going "ouch!" when it starts from cold. I have no doubt Mr Toyota will sort it if it does have a fault, afterall he has a reputation to keep up.
