MOT Failure? - 23461411
Will my car fail its MOT if on ly 4 of the 5 forward gears are working?

how would they test this?
surely if first and second are working then the car will be fine?

no that doesn't affect safety does it and you might have put a 4 speed box in yourself how do they know. if its down to a linkage and its hanging off that could be different.

It's 4th that's missing, internal gearbox problem. I have been driving it like this for the last 5 months and don't really want to spend £ getting it fixed when the car isn't worth that much. (1992 1.9 GTI with 105,000miles)

Change the shift knob to one that doesn't have any gear markings...tell them you have a very rare, factory special order 3-speed 8-).

still shouldn't fail why would they need to drive it anywhere using 4th gear (into mot bay and out of mot bay) no road test involved unless they have a break down on brake tester or you have limited slip diff then they have to road test brakes using a different piece of kit which sits on the floor of car and measures braking (highly unlikely).

I watch my MOT's being done and they never use anything but first or reverse gear. Most times with first gear they ask me to drive it onto the ramp so they only know about reverse gear when they back out to the rolling road and then stick the rear outside to do the emissions test.

Extending the argument to its logical conclusion, if your car had no gears at all it would be very safe - provided the lights and engine emissions were acceptable?

you dont even need lights for an mot if you can prove the vehicle is only used in daylight, strange but true ,have also heard of a car being mot.d without an engine cant recall why this was done but i know it was . i have mot'd a car some years ago without registration mot'd on the chassis number that was fun as the examiner kept telling me it couldn't be done.

You'll have no problem with the missing cog - the gearbox doesn't come into the test.
