VW Golf auto 1.8gl 1996 gearbox noise - ibster
When the gearbox changes up through the gears I can hear (from the nearside of the car) a metallic scrapy type nise. what is this. should I be worried? There is no problem in the gear change or drive. Should I just close the nearside widow and forget it? Help please.

Still a good idea to eliminate the cheapest and easiest first

Autos do wear their pads out quicker, and this can be accelerated if a caliper is sticking, and noises can be caused by corrosion or similar. Worth the half hour to eliminate it I think

So, from the replys it looks like brakes not the gears. Mind you the brakes do judder (grunky noise) just before the car comes to a stop. I thought this was because the car sits at home all week and is driven only on sats and suns.
