Fitting CD changer to BMW - Phil P
Well I collected my 2001 520i SE on Sunday, but no CD player (scandalous in a car of this class)!

Not having used those weird cassette things for years I've bought a BMW CD changer off eBay.

Now I know the car is pre-wired for this changer (I've checked the connections are present in the boot) but can anyone give me any advice on how easy it is to actually fit it?

I was hoping it was simply a case of plugging it in, but from what I've read BMW dealers charge £50 for the privilige so there must be a bit more to it than that surely.. I certainly don't want to get involved in drilling holes in my new pride and joy!!

Phil - If the unit is a genuine BMW OE unit, should just drop into the allocated recess in the boot and connect wires.

If you have any problems, I suggest (if you have not already done so), join one of the BMW forums, where you will get plenty of help, e.g. www.bmwland.co.uk

Another excellent site for E39 info is www.bmwtips.com. It is an American site so won't have any 520 specific info (that model is not available there), but the rest of the car is similar enough.

My 2001 530i has a CD changer in the boot, behind the trim panel on the left-hand side.

The cable should be in there somewhere as the car is supplied with CD prep. My changer is mounted vertically on brass-coloured mounts - not having seen it pre-CD I don't know if they're part of the car or the changer though.

If you have got no mounting locations on the CD player, it would be best not to drill holes into your new car and instead, attach the changer with velcro.

Thanks for your help guys.

I just received my BMW changer through the post, which I bought used off eBay, but there is are no brackets attached to it which I saw in pictures of other changers for sale.

Question is - since my 520i is pre-wired will the necessary already be in the boot or will I now have to fork out for brackets?

Can't check it as it's currently being serviced and I'm the impatient sort..
