Volkswagen Polo (2022) - Battery Charging - can you do it yourself? - UK-KR

It would seem that VW don't want anyone to charge the battery in my car except an authorised dealer. Given the extensive electronics I can understand their nervousness!

I have what I think is a very good battery charger (Victron Energy Blue Smart) which provides a wealth of charging options and appears to have a very good auto charging facility.

Any views, advice or warnings would be very much appreciated.

I’m assuming you are referring to the 12 volt battery, then I really can’t see any problems using the Victron charger.

I dunno what could go wrong if you disconnect it (probably using a maintainer of some kind on the car) but I'm quite naive about the level of awfulness routinely now achieved by new cars, and routinely fail to appreciate it.

I have the same car, the R line. Can I charge the battery still connected at say 1.5amps as I used to do with a much older car?

There should be no problem with charging the car battery in-situ from an external DC power source provided the charging voltage is limited to 13.6V and the current is limited to less than 2A.

To be really safe, connect the charger negative to the engine block and the positive to the battery positive.

Why is that "really safe"?

More specifically, why would it be more "really safe" than either (a) charging directly to the battery terminals, which seems to be equivalent with an intact car charging circuit or (b) disconnecting the battery from the car systems entirely, perhaps with a maintainer or another battery keeping the on-board systems energised, which ought to avoid any impact of the chargeing on the car systems?

(As above, I am not discounting the possibility of some superfluous built-in novelty gotcha in a 2022 we-have-the-technology car, but I wouldn't know what it would be. Perhaps "coding" authentication of the battery to the cars systems might be a complicating factor?)

Really safe because that's the way the car normally charges the battery; alternator negative to engine block. Perhaps I'm being overly pedantic but I worry about how sensitive carmakers make their electronics.
