Hi
Just changed the windscreen on my escort (mk4), and was wondering what I could/should use to glue the rear-view mirror back on.
Ford seem to have used some sort of spongy black stuff when they stuck it on first hand. The windscreen itself has a black square to fix the mirror to, so I'm not going onto the glass itself.
Many thanks

I may be wrong (often am) but I believe your accessory shop will sell you a double sided sticky pad designed for this purpose.

Frostbite is right.Just make sure the glass and rvm backing is clean otherwise won`t stick properly.(will fall off)

Whatever you do, don't use Araldite or similar two-part epoxy. My friend used this on a Rover, and used a stick to prop it while it set overnight, in the morning, the windscreen had a big star break which centred on the mirror mounting. He insisted the stick pressure was very small, and blamed the epoxy, I didn't believe him, until years later, I saw a car at a scrap yard, and it had exactly the same problem, upon inspection. there was epoxy dripping down from the lower edhe of the mirror mount.

What do you think may have caused the screen to break? may be the heat that is generated by the chemical reaction of the two part poxy?

If you can find it in your area, Loctite do a specific mirror-to-screen adhesive.
|
Use the rubber/foam pad only on this mirror, other methods will either break the screen or fall off.
Tip - Use a hairdryer to heat the pad up prior to affixing it to the screen, it greatly enhances the adhesive and subsequently, the bonding time is reduced. Still, it's a good idea to firmly hold it in place for 2/3 mins after the initial placing.

On the Ford Escort you need to use the double sided sticky pad, make sure both surfaces are clean and dry, as DL says warming will help, also add a drop of oil into the ball/socket of the mirror.
The use of arraldite and the likes breaks the screens because they dont allow the mirror boss to expand and contract in the hot/cold, this stresses the glass and breaks it. as Growler says above there is a Loctite product that does the job.
|
Also use the hairdryer briefly on the windscreen before applying adhesive tab. This ensures no condensation from your breathing weakens the bond.
|
Use of Araldite puts tremendous stain on the glass as it is not compliant with the glass expansion and contraction. Temperature changes cause localised stress in the glass and pop its busted. Regards Peter

Hi
Thank to everyone for all your replies.
Went to halfords and got 2 sticky pads in a pack, 1 was a perfect fit for the mirror too (even had it's picture on the front :-)!).
Cheers.
