Accident repair - BobbyG
I will cut to the chase as some of this was covered in a previous post.
Rear drivers wing and passenger door was scraped on my Scenic. Put it through Esure's authorised repairer.
Got it back a couple of weeks ago.

I noticed on Saturday that although they seem to have feathered it well towards the front of the car ie. I can't see a difference between passenger and driver door, there seems to be a big difference going back the way. The rear wing seems to now be a very distinctly different shade of silver from the painted bumper and the bootlid, which wraps round to meet the wing.

From a previous car repair, on a bright red Clio, I know that the standard seems to be if the difference is visible in "God's light".

Should I expect that the paintwork be "feathered" to the back as well? And onto the plastic bumper?

Or is that just the joy of metallic paint and insurance jobs! I know Pologirl had a running discussion on this, were there any particulars with regard to the paint?

Any advice appreciated.

Mod, meant to post this in Discussions - can you move please?

I can tell you why its happened

The rear bumper and hatch have been masked off as they provide natural stop lines. Hence no feathering took place there. To feather the rear hatch and bumper all the fiddly round cornererd bits would have had to be masked off. So they took the easy route.

Are sure its not just becuase the new paint is cleaner and newer?

RP, don't take this the wrong way, but of course the new paint is cleaner and newer!
However, it is now a distinctly different shade to the rear hatch and bumper.
My question is - is this the norm that I have to expect or is it worth trying to get the other panels sprayed and feathered? Or would that make it look worse as the bumper and bootlid wrap round to the rear of the car - would it then be noticeable there??

This sounds like one of those things where you cut your hair when you're a kid and it doesn't quite match the other side so you cut a bit off the other side, the other side is now too long... before you know it you've cut yourself a whole new fringe and it's school photo day in the morning! Aaaanyway.... thanks to my new found expertise I can offer this advice...

It might be that the 'new' bit has been sprayed, waxed and polished up, but that the 'old' bit wasn't taken back and waxed up again to match so it looks different.

Or it might be that they didn't use enough/too much metallic flake in the paint. Apparently there's a code for every make and colour that Renault should have given them. (Someone else told me that when I had trouble with Polo so I'm not too sure about it!)

Whatever it is, take it back to the bodyshop first, and get them to look at the care with you and agree that there's a problem. If they wont agree, the insurance company can send an independent assessor out to your car, and if he agrees that there is a noticeable difference, they can force the bodyshop to put it right or send it somewhere else. If the insurance company wont agree, you might have a fight on your hands, at which point you need to decide if it's actually worth the hassle and stress. It will be harder if the insurance company have paid the invoice, as in their eyes you have accepted the car and the matter is closed.

Hope that helps

Quality of accident repairs seems to be going down these days. Take it back to the bodyshop.

If you want you could run it round to a local paint factor - get one of the lads there to look at it. They'll probably tell you that the wrong paint mix code was used - also likely to have colour 'chips' to do a comparison against.

BTW, never sign a repair off in the dark or in the rain!

Sorry BobbyG, I should have added, are you sure its the wrong shade or do you think it will tone down a bit given time?

If you can tell, then don't accept it, I have had solid, metallic and pealescent paintwork done over time, the quality of the work has varied from undetectable to appauling. The bodydhop should get the paint adjusted if it doesn't match first time round. Some even have a densichromometer to test the colour and the computer at the paint supplier mixes it exactly to its readings.

Well I had a minor paint job done on my car. I could tell the difference if I looked very carefully and in the right light. There was a 3 year guarantee with the work so I decided to do nothing. After 12 months the repair couldn't be detected. So my question is Bobby does the difference hit you in the face?

It does hit me in the face though maybe I am unconsciously looking for it?
Think I will try another paint place at the weekend and get their opinion.
Thanks for replies so far.
