It might be low mileage and an import but you'd have to be utterly mad to pay that much for one. I'd say £2,500 is more realistic. That price makes this look good value. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MODERN-CLASSIC-MERCEDES-S280-AU...c

I was never a great fan of them when new, although the 2.0 petrol was a decent torquey engine. I think it was fitted to this model or I might be confusing it with the previous 400 series that was launched in 1989. The 2.0 had plenty of pull through the gears and had quite a nice sound when worked hard but not in an unrefined way.

Completely agree. A sub par car when new isn't improved by being stored. If you had stored a BM 850 or 6 series I think you'd find more takers.

Sorry no, I think it is reasonably priced for an immaculate example. Rare cars now and that won’t have a spec of rust on it anywhere.

They are only rare because no-one can be bothered to keep them on the road.

I've personally never understood the rarity equals value thing. Sure if you want one and there aren't many left you might have to pay more, but that presupposes you wanted one in the first place.

For £5k you could get a fairly decent fairly modern car, that will be safer, more reliable, better rust protected.

I would love to know how many 'preserved' cars are SORN with little intention of ever going 'on the road' except possibly to rallies - and then maybe on a low loader. I think there are quite a lot. I have visited a collection of 20 to 30 Pugs which cannot have turned a wheel for years.

I no longer own a 205, but when I did I used to check the How Many Left website, which showed that about 80-90% remaining of some models were on SORN. There are allegedly about 15 examples of my current 306, only 2 or 3 on the road. One of those must be mine ....

As for rarity equalling value, it only depends on finding a person who wants one enough to buy it.

You probably wouldn't get anything modern with a mileage as low for that price, other than perhaps a base model Dacia Sandero.

It's also a lot more logical to pay £5k for something like this than the silly amounts of money being paid for completely rotten old Minis and Mk1 Escorts.

What I do find curious though is that it's an import from Japan, and particularly why it ended up there in the first place. Why would you go to the bother of shipping what is essentially a Honda, but made in the UK all the way over to Japan? There must have been locally built vehicles which were better and cheaper. I can see why someone in Japan would buy a BMW, Mercedes, Volvo etc., but the only real thing going for those Rovers was that they were a Honda, they're weren't exactly prestigious or some rare sports car.

Didn’t Vanden Plas versions of previous BL models (Allegro?) have a following in Japan. I am guessing that some people took over later models too.

People were not personally importing these to Japan, Rover Group had a sizeable presence over there. The mini sold like hot cakes, the metro too and both came standard with automatic and air conditioning! Most people will still have bought Japanese cars in Japan, it was almost taboo to buy foreign, but many still did. Looking through the 2004 paperwork for my discovery there is a pamphlet with a map of Japan listing all the Land Rover dealerships, it is surprisingly extensive! A lot of the Japanese Rover group cars got kit we never saw, like the aforementioned air conditioning, or P38s with a specially designed panasonic sat nav system (as opposed to the vid-Dayton units we got). Most Japanese buyers (ok im generalising) have a habit of immediately taking their new car to get an aftermarket head unit installed, as you can see on the Rover in the ad. My discovery was no different coming with a Cazzerio or something, which I think is a sub brand of panasonic. The car in the ad probably wasnt stored, just cherished. Five grand is not worth as much as it used to be!

Do you know why vintage toys are so valuable?, because nobody could be bothered to look after them when they were current. And why would they, they are toys, they are supposed to be played with.

Cars are designed to be used. Why would anyone be bothered to keep any 'bread and butter' car on the road?. Nobody buys a new Golf and thinks, "well I better really look after this just because it may be worth a bit of money in twenty years".

I'm with Metropolis here, I don't think it is too expensive. It certainly isn't a bargain, but just look through the back pages of any classic car magazine to get an idea of what sort of prices are being asked for cars which were humdrum everyday cars from the 80's and 90's.

All it needs is someone with a bit of spare cash, and who'd Dad had one when he was younger.

Quite apart from the fact that I prefer to drive something that is designed to cope with today’s traffic conditions and general driving experience, my concern would be if, for example, that auto box packs up. However, having watched Wheeler Dealers I realise that there are specialist businesses that stock spares for classic cars. Quite surprising the seemingly obscure parts that are available if you know where to look.

At less than half the price this has much greater Merit for me.

May be the car is of some use in a period play or the likes of Endeavour? Must be a good little earner if you can get your car on a film or TV

lol, I see what you did there Trilogy. Is it just me, or did the older Vauxhall auto boxes have some of the most aggressive sport modes known to man. Seriously I remember this all the way from Astras to Omegas, it literally transformed the car in a way that shouldnt have been possible!

Sport mode on that era of Vauxhall 4-speed autoboxes were quite straightforward - lock out 4th gear, allow the engine to rev up to the rev limiter and switch the aircon compressor off at full throttle - nothing more than that.

They just seemed more aggressive in sport mode than other cars I have driven, thats all, although I do appreciate that your summary is correct. I do miss 4 speed autos generally, I found them smoother with less gear changes especially around town.

Whilst I don't think this would be my choice for that money as others have said you only need to see how much surviving common 1980s cars are now going for to see it will happen to 90s cars before too long (and already is in some cases).

It doesn't matter so much if it is any good or not as a car, it is about having something no one else has and rekindling memories of the past.

I guess the test of whether or not something is overpriced or not is to watch what it goes for.

The manual tourer was the best car imo, I did for years try to get another one as my one was rear ended and written off, but could not find one in as good condition as mine was, and price was over the top for the age, but as there isn`t many about, bought a Honda Civic instead

Well, if you really really really really want a white 416 then you're in luck I guess and may be £5.5k is a bargain!

Personally, if I wanted to get something "unusual" then go for unusual. The same dealer has a Toyota Century in stock. Who doesn't want curtains in the back instead of blacked out windows and I know for sure my missus is going to love sticking her legs through the hole in the front passenger seat when she wants to nap on long journeys!

Lovely, but where would you get it serviced?.

In Japan, Toyota technicians have do extensive extra training to become 'qualified' to work on a Century.

That feature with the opening section on the front passenger seat is well cool though!. I remember seeing a Nissan President for sale on Autotrader, it had the same thing.

Actually, just had a look and it is still for sale. Not surprising with the price being asked, bit optimistic methinks!,
