Hello People!
I am after opinions and thoughts on a route dilemma.
I am fortunate enough to be travelling to the great spectacle that is the Le Mans 24h this weekend. Due to time and money pressures, I will be leaving England on the 1700 tunnel on Friday night. I have always travelled during the day before and avoided Paris like the plague, even though this route has more autoroute than the Rouen alternative. From Rouen, the last third of the journey is mostly single carriageway and whilst reasonable, is not as fast as autoroute.
I am wondering if I would be likely to pass Paris trouble-free at 8pm Friday night, or would I be better to stick to the route
I know? How about the return journey? Will be leaving LeMans about mid-day Monday.
Look forward to your thoughts
Thanks
Andy

I don't know most of the route at all but I did live in Paris for a year.
I'd have thought you'd be hitting Paris more like 9 - 10 p.m. by which time the Périph should be busy, but fast flowing.
Generally rush hour in Paris isn't too bad, believe it or not, although I have a pretty high tolerance of city traffic before I get stressed.

DHM:
Probably will be more like 9pm actually.
No problem with busy city traffic, just not very keen on miles of stationary traffic
Thanks for your advice

My last two journeys around Paris have ended up with a four hour delay and the week before last a 3 hour delay. Before these two journeys I very rarely had problems but I am now begining to get fed up with the French Capital.

Have a look at- www.theaa.com
I know when I go down the Rhone valley they have an excellent route round the eastern edge of Paris (La Francilienne) which I do with the caravan in tow. I believe they have a similar trick up their sleeve for the west side but this is obviously a long way round as their route for your trip takes you towards (but not into!) Rouen.
And with La Greve causing 200Km jams into Paris, that's got to be another reason to avoid!

Can't comment about Paris as have always travelled Wed or Thurs via Rouen. Friends who went via Chartres reckon no point. Return via Rouen to Dieppe takes about 3.5 hours, leaving 6am on Monday!

removed a long and complicated link which didn\'t work anyway to www.mappy.com .M.
I hope that the above link works. It is one of sites I use for France as I like to see how much the tolls are going to be and i like the layout.
I have not gone into the details of the route.

Mappy! Good site I had forgotten about.

avoid Paris like the Plague unless you are entering or going round at very unsocial hours. Even then, there is a good chance of some sort of accident slowing down traffic to 2 or even 1 lanes.
Stick to open and easy autoroute, why put yourself out?

Interesting Q (and I'm very jealous - do you need a navigator!!)
MS autoroute recommends going via Paris (round the east side) but via Michelin recommends via Rouen and Alencon (4 hrs 30 mins from Calais, 261 miles 100 of which are non motorway)

Teke the Rouen route. Only the section befor Alencon is non-mway now and it will be a much more relaxed journey, and having tried both there's no difference in time. But if Paris is snarled it would take longer that way.

Just to really annoy me the air-con specialist at work recieved a call yesterday from the Mitsibushi rep asking him if he would like to go to Le-Mans on Friday and return Monday for an all expenses paid trip.
I might give up the electrical side and get involved with the air-con as apparantly this is common practice within the industry.
Can you believe that he wanted to know what was actually happening this weekend at Le-Mans. He thought it might be touring cars or something boring.

Thanks for all the replies.
I think, seeing as it'll probably be quiet late-on Friday evening, I'll see if I can knock a bit of time off the journey by sticking to the Autoroute and risking the Paris experience. Or maybe I'll stick to the route I know and the more predictable timing. Then again, I've not done the Paris route before and it'd be interesting to see...

Avoid the Paris route!!! If you do go that way use the A/N104 Francilienne way ( turn off signed near Charles de Gaulle airport), slightly longer than the inner ring road or A86 but much better for traffic.
