My aunt is looking to buy a Mondeo or post 95 Escort within a maximum budget of £1500.

I found this on Autotrader but it seems very cheap so I wondering what regulars think. Worth a look?

I should add that it's the equipment that makes this one attractive, which is why I'm suspicous of the cheap price, but I may be just been over-cautious.

I am aware that ABS is a big expense if it goes wrong mind...

Well cars in Newacastle seem to be among the cheapest in the country anyway, Blue, and I doubt very much that it would make as much as £750 at auction.

It is ten years old and, from a dealer, that would be suspiciously cheap but I would expect a part ex offer on that car would only be £600. Yeah, it's worth a look, although obviously at that price you can't expect it to be perfect and you might find you'd get better value for money long term by spending more.

£1500 will probably just about get her into a 97 Mondeo, so if the £750 one lasts two years and the £1500 one five, it will work out cheaper in the long run...

Newacastle

That was a typo, not me making fun of your accent :-)

Good luck

LOL, I don't have a newcastle accent, for starters I'm from Sunderland! We have a different accent, normally known as Mackem. However, I don't have a mackem accent either, despite having been born and raised here I don't seem to have picked it up!

Anyway, thanks for the reply, I got a text off her to tell me not to bother continuing the search, she has bought a 95M new shape MK5 Escort 1.6i LX, it looked quite good in the advert on AutoTrader where I found it (it had better be good then or else it'll all be mhy fault!), with an indicated 70,000 miles on the clock, if it's genuine then it should have a lot of life left in it.

I'm giving her a lift to pick it up tommorow, when I've recovered from this late night posting session which for some reason I felt the need to do after a particularly rubbish night in Beach.

Ahh

The lovely lilt of the maccam ladies with their bright orange faces, off to Pazazz without any form of coat, only their arms wrapped tightly around their waists to keep themselves warm. Great memories! Spend many a lazy afternoon in the Ivy House.

I suppose you are too young to remember the Blue Monkey?

Of course I can't remember that!

It's a much better class of lady now, most of the orange faces are gone, although I never go to Pizzaz, I'm not normally wanting to get involved in fights with random people, so I go to Beach instead. Much better. :) Oh, and to get back on a motoring theme, you can park on the double yellows outside of Beach without getting a ticket after 7pm, not that I normally have the car with me!

Oh, and we're going to pick the Escort up after lunch, £1350 she ended up paying, I'm gonna have to ask her if she's Hpi checked it, and also get her a Disklok. A 1.6 Zetec Escort is still a fairly attractive car...

The Beach? Where is that?

I used to remember the nissan lads all driving round town in their brand new almera gti's at weekends.

Oh and the joyriding in South Shields (motoring link).

All the fun of the early 90's

Sounds good...

Beach is a newish night club opened in Vine Place, next to the old Technical College, which is about to re-open as a new night club called Varsity :-) My nights are now sorted!

To keep it motoring, I have to say I find it realy sad when people go circling the little one way system around Vine Place in their tarted up cars on a night. They think people are admiring their cars but I hear what people are really saying, and it's along the lines of "How sad, he's spent so much money on his car that he can't afford to go out"

What do they hope to acheive by circling the club 3 times?

Picked up the Escort earlier, it seems in largely good condition, very little rust, only a bit in the arches, slightly patchy service records but plenty of receipts but it has a very tidy interior, Hpi checks clear and mileage appears to be genuine at 70,000ish, and it runs nice and quiet with no sign of mis-fire.

The only faults appear to be with the driver's seat height adjust and the rear wiper. I'm gonna post about those in Technical Matters.

I really do like the car, and it makes me bitterly regret allowing myself to be persuaded into buying my first Mk3 Fiesta instead of an Escort, which appears to be an infinately better car...

Oh, forgot to say, the Mondeo I was asking about has apparently been in the Autotrader for at least a week and a half.

At that price it would've gone quickly if it was in good condition...
