Skoda Yeti 1.2 6 speed manual gearbox. - A cautionary tale - ColinLee

I bought a 64 reg Yeti from a Skoda main dealer in March 17, with 12,500 miles on the clock. I was assured that it had been a Skoda courtesy car, and fully serviced.

SInce then I had it serviced at the required intervals, and always using the services recommended by the Skoda main dealer.

The car has now just done 29,000 miles, when a whining noise appeared from the front of the car. I immediately rang the Skoda garage, and after waiting for a week got it in for a £60 diagnostic. They rang later that day to say the confirmed the noise, but needed further work in draining the gearbox oil to check (another £120).

After 3 days waiting, they said they thought it might be the bearings, and another gearbox would be £4025. Needless to say I complained both to the garage and Skoda UK, and got little joy.

I took it to another recommended garage, who drove the car with me as passenger, and within a couple of minutes, said it was almost certain the bearings. To strip out the gearbox, rebuild, test and fit with a 2 year unlimited warranty on mileage, parts and labour was £1230 including VAT. I cannot see how Skoda justify the huge difference in cost for an identical item.

Update, the gearbox has been rebuilt and it was BOTH sets of bearings (top and bottom), and the specialist could not believe that they both should have gone so quickly.

I will write again to Skoda, and will not be using Skoda dealer again for servicing.

Comments welcome

It's a 5 year old car made by VAG. They rarely offer goodwill. outside warranty period.

If you want service buy Honda or Toyota: a far better record.

Main dealers don't faff about fixing something (and its arguable they may not have the skills on site to rebuild a gearbox) they sell a complete new unit which is fitted by a technician.

Years ago very few buyers of cars out of warranty would bother going to a main dealer for any reason other than to buy genuine parts for DIY fitment, most sensible owners went to independent workshops where mechanics would repair things where possible.

This is exactly what you have done, the sensible common sense route to getting your car fixed, the dealer fix might have been slightly quicker, certainly it would have been a more efficient wallet draining method, those glass palaces don't come cheap.

I doubt the maker will be in the least interested in contributing to the repair, but you never know, pity that even with full Skoda service history (we assume this is the case as the OP is slightly ambiguous, but i may be reading it wrong, on who physically serviced the car) they were not more forthcoming, ref Madf's pertinent post, of course if you went outside Skoda for servicing that puts a different slant on things.

I bought 2 cars in the 1990s that required gearbox attention within 10,000m - difficulty engaging 1st & reverse - in both occasions synchromesh 1st &2nd + cogs for 1st/2nd & reverse.

In each case the gearbox was stripped at the local franchise & rebuilt - 3 days start to finish.

Both rebuilds were successful with cars doing just under 100K with no further gearbox issues.

Since when has any modern manual gearbox become a service item? The franchise or independent has a quick look around, oil change, brake inspection and away you go .Plugs and filters now last longer and if you want your aircon serviced, well that's another extra outside the service!

Thanks for the comments. In fact it was always serviced according to the Skoda schedule by the main dealer concerned, and if anything additional was recommended it was also done.

The car should be ready for me to collect today from the independent garage, and within the quoted estimate of £1025 plus vat. He did make the comment that the all the bearing sets were very badly worn and bright red!!

Needless to say I shall be using this garage in future
